- Zonos2, on 11/12/2008, -2/+0More like "meat" this Dr. Badcock.
- marv0, on 11/12/2008, -10/+2Not only is that a dumb waste of a comment Friend, but your name makes me want to throw up. Bravo.
- thumperings, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1welcome to the new 4chan digg.
- SenorBabyMan, on 11/12/2008, -18/+0I bet 96 of those Diggs on this submission where blind Diggs. Digg this if you dugg this article without even clicking the NY Times link.
- soulonfire928, on 11/12/2008, -3/+6So I can now blame my parents without abandon?
- AlwaysDuggDown, on 11/12/2008, -14/+4This article is so unfair. There is hardly any indication that liberalism is genetic
- subterfuge, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1actually, you are incorrect. there was an article in a science magazine that i read that said that political orientation is, indeed, influenced greatly by heredity. by political orientation, the article meant "pro-change" or "anti-change". both kinds of people are necessary for a healthy society, IMO. having both moderates the society and is good for social evolution.
- enantiodromia, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1what a sad lonely little troll you are
- AlwaysDuggDown, on 11/12/2008, -2/+1Hey....I'm not little!
It was a joke. I don't bat 1.000 with my jokes, especially in politically charged environments....but the future is bright for anti-leftist comedy. Stewart and his ilk had their 8 years of gloriously teed up jokes from the White House....I'm warming up for mine.
Tip your waitress.
- AlwaysDuggDown, on 11/12/2008, -2/+1Hey....I'm not little!
- ufia, on 11/12/2008, -9/+2Your child may have mental disorders like autism and schizophrenia if you surprise him supporting Ron Paul on the internets.
- krnldmp, on 11/12/2008, -2/+31Everyone is schizophrenic. All you have to do is stay awake for a week to let it out.
- milomilomilo, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2A week?
Try three days. Hell, after two and you start to get really paranoid and show some signs of psychotic thinking. An air vent might sound like a guy moaning.
There are people who are truly mentally ill but the real problem isn't even over-diagnosis; its that we have so many ***** things we refer to AS ILLNESSES.
Anything outside of the social norm or different brain functions and you are a defective person.
It isn't that the system is broken, its that the system exists in any form at all.
- milomilomilo, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2A week?
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 11/12/2008, -10/+3See, Neocons? Competition is not always the solution! :D
- brandita, on 11/12/2008, -1/+11That's crazy talk.
- davin3000, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Ba dum tish.
- bodisatvah, on 11/12/2008, -4/+5Or schizophrenia is similar to epilepsy except the neural results from the misfirings are things that can be linked to memories (hallucinations) as opposed to seizures and bright lights with epilepsy. And that the psychosis associated with schizophrenia is moreso growing up without truly understanding reality because of how it is presented through this filter as opposed to a fundamental part of the disease itself. That seems just as reasonable considering neuroplasticity.
I think that it is a fallacy to say that brain disorders exist on some kind of "spectrum" as if they have a common thread other than they cause a disjoint between perception and reality in one form or another. - vinigrette, on 11/12/2008, -1/+17So, to anyone actually interested in the article, the proposed theory is really interesting if you've read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. The idea that a fetus competes with its mother, trying to obtain maximum resources according to its own agenda, made me think of pregnancy as kind of like... having an Alien pop out of your belly, like in the movie. :)
- Hnnnnnghhh, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9I was thinking the exact same thing. Funny how after reading The Selfish Gene, you imagine everything as statistical competition.
- vinigrette, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Totally! And as cooperate/defect game theory grids. :) Have you read any of Dawkins's other books?
- Hnnnnnghhh, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1The Blind Watchmaker, Climbing Mount Improbable, The Extended Phenotype, Unweaving the Rainbow, A Devil's Chaplain and The God Delusion. After the Selfish Gene, all his biology books are basically the same and hard to get through. As for his atheism/philosophy of science books, they're all pretty good.
- Hnnnnnghhh, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9I was thinking the exact same thing. Funny how after reading The Selfish Gene, you imagine everything as statistical competition.
- SisterSabbay, on 11/12/2008, -12/+1Yes, it is a well known fact that Parent's genes have a lot to do with their offspring's subsequent Mental illness.

AdventistWheat.com- wakkow, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but that's really simplifying the point of the article.
- Mujokan, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Spamming bland comments to get the URL noticed...
- wakkow, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but that's really simplifying the point of the article.
- lusenok2, on 11/12/2008, -1/+19Very good study indeed.. And incredibly crappy comments!
- enantiodromia, on 11/12/2008, -2/+5while an interesting theory, i've heard stoned college students come up with better
the numbers show that schizophrenia on the mothers side increases the chance of the child having autism, unless you assume that autistic men are attracted to schizophrenic women i guess.- EnergyEinstein, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Opposites attract! :)
- enantiodromia, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2oh snap, you might be on to something...
- Terr01, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Perhaps autistic men probably make schizophrenic women more comfortable and vice-versa.
The guy acts meekly where the woman is oversensitive, for a normal perception.
The woman acts strongly but the guy already misses most of it, for a normal perception.
- datastorageguy, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Wait...some women aren't like that?
- EnergyEinstein, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Opposites attract! :)
- drmobutu, on 11/12/2008, -3/+9Dugg, for Dr. Badcock...
- blindeyeseesall, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Christopher Badcock... awesome.
- blindeyeseesall, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Christopher Badcock... awesome.
- wycheck89yo, on 11/12/2008, -3/+1Since we have so many experts on digg, why don't you guys get together and find some kind of relief for schizophrenia patients. They've got to be in constant suffering. I feel so bad for them.
- wakkow, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2If you want to help, donate to NAMI: http://www.nami.org/
- Auricfield, on 11/12/2008, -9/+2Autism is caused by vaccination damage.... but of course the doctors will deny it (if they acknowledged that they'd be de-registered).
- Hnnnnnghhh, on 11/12/2008, -0/+7Scientifically controlled evidence please. Jenny McCarthy does not count.
- Barackalypse, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Here's what Time had to say on the subject:
http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,172 ...
- davin3000, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4I'd really like to see more fascinating science articles like this reach the front page. I don't mind that it's a very early theory and even, possibly, completely wrong. But to read about people being truly creative within science is very uplifting.
- mannajar, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6My favourite part:
"The theory emerged in part from thinking about events other than mutations that can change gene behavior. And it suggests entirely new avenues of research, which, even if they prove the theory to be flawed, are likely to provide new insights into the biology of mental disease."
I like that. An open mindedness or freedom of thought that's not about proving a theory as much as it is about explorating ideas and being open to whatever insights might occur. If more people had that attitude, they'd have the ability to explore religions without becoming true believers, to explore conspiracies without the tinfoil hat, to explore politics withoiut become a mindless ideologue. The list goes on and on.- ssjbriguy, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4True science is about honest intellectual inquiry.
- arilestariono, on 11/12/2008, -4/+0
- wakkow, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Except that many mental illnesses don't show up until later in life. For example, most schizophrenic cases I've read about start occurring during late teens / 20's. Sometimes, there's late onset schizophrenia (that a relative of mine has) that doesn't start until 40 or later. It's hard to examine an illness that hasn't manifested itself yet.
- kyravon, on 11/12/2008, -3/+3Oh my god, that certainly is a "creative" reading. Associating the "psychotic" with the female and the "overly objective" with male. Really new & creative. NOT! Will we ever get past these tired stereotypes and develop science based on facts not their "own observations"!
- loopyloopy, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1a female digger ...awesome
- BongoSoptopaleo, on 11/12/2008, -6/+0THE GIST:
"Their idea is, in broad outline, straightforward. Dr. Crespi and Dr. Badcock propose that an evolutionary tug of war between genes from the father’s sperm and the mother’s egg can, in effect, tip brain development in one of two ways. A strong bias toward the father pushes a developing brain along the autistic spectrum, toward a fascination with objects, patterns, mechanical systems, at the expense of social development. A bias toward the m"other moves the growing brain along what the researchers call the psychotic spectrum, toward hypersensitivity to mood, their own and others’. This, according to the theory, increases a child’s risk of developing schizophrenia later on, as well as mood problems like bipolar disorder and depression."
What a CROCK of ***** this THEORY is!! And these guys get paid? WTF! I mean, its not a BAD GUESS mind you....just that its a, well, uh, er, NO BRAINER! Even in INSANITY the GENES pit PATRIARCHY agin MATRIARCHY! This is just ASININE and must be the result of a SLOW news day at the NY TIMES. Give me a break! If this is the APEX of PSYCHIATRY--then, im afraid its DEAD (along with PHYSICS and the rest of that ***** they call SCIENCE)!!- mockupscaledown, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4There's something wrong with your shift key.
- qwertyxuiop, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I saw this Prof give a talk on this topic a few weeks ago... he teaches at the Univiversity that I attend.
It seemed to me that the whole theory still needs a little tweaking... or maybe a lot of tweeking.
Mind you I am no expert on genetics but even I thought it was lacking.
I'm kinda suprised that it is making news. - scb0825, on 11/12/2008, -1/+1Man... I've heard some bad last-names before... but Badcock takes the cake.
- qwertyxuiop, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I used to know a girl with the last name Topless.
thats my favorite
- qwertyxuiop, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2I used to know a girl with the last name Topless.
- cnsurvey, on 11/12/2008, -0/+0A new theory of brain development ,Ilike!
