- iChopPryde, on 10/31/2008, -8/+11WOW to all the Mac bashing looks like we got a lot of M$ Fan Boys which is unfortunate, never understood why people care so much for one or the other, if you like OSX use the damn thing if you like Vista or XP then use the damn thing and if you like Linux then just use the damn thing! According to your worlds if we all sided with 1 OS then we have NO OPTIONS! Now that would suck!

Look a little closer. It's spelled "Mac".
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/31/2008, -20/+41No, a handful of you are waiting. You bought into the niche/clique marketing after all.
- Reaktor5, on 10/31/2008, -15/+9The "small" niche is slowly gaining market share. If Google is serious about taking winning the web browser battle Chrome needs to run on all three platforms like Firefox.
- Reaktor5, on 10/31/2008, -7/+2Minus taking. Forgive me Digg, I am tired.
- arjie, on 10/31/2008, -3/+3But Google isn't. They said so themselves. It is supposed to be a sort of technology demonstrator. What the hell is with you if-you-want-to-take-over-the-world people?

- Dylson, on 10/31/2008, -1/+2?
- celotil, on 10/31/2008, -3/+1I'd give up on that wish. I just went to the site and any pretext of Chrome ever running on OS X is gone.
It didn't auto-detect I was using Safari on OS X and offer the email link. I can't find a link to Chrome on OS X, and the subtitle on the site is,
"Google Chrome: a new web browser for Windows"
I don't think we're getting Chrome on OS X.- celotil, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1My bad, I didn't delve deeper into the site, although why Google would make it less obvious that they were working on a version of Chrome for the Mac, I don't know.

- quidpro, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7I've tried the latest build and scrolling is vastly improved. On my laptop, touch scrolling would result in behavior that was like hitting the Page Dn or Page Up keys...now it scrolls normally. Don't know about middle-button-scroll (if that's what you mean) I assume this beta would have that same fix, but won't know till I try. I might just stick with the latest builds regardless.
- FurtThePirate, on 10/31/2008, -1/+15finding out that I couldn't do that made me so mad.

- chesterjosiah, on 10/30/2008, -1/+30Top Issues Fixed:
-Scrolling with laptop touchpads now works.
-Improved performance and reliability for plugins (like Flash, Silverlight, QuickTime, and Windows Media). We fixed issues with video not loading, stopping after a second, and slowing down or freezing Google Chrome (100% CPU usage).
-Fixed the 'chrome has crashed' message when you close a tab that was showing PDF using Adobe Reader 9.
-We no longer store data from secure sites (they use https: and show a lock in the address bar) in your history. You can still search your history for the site's address, but not the contents on the page.

- ashukg, on 10/31/2008, -15/+2Didn't this lose share in last few weeks? Why are they spending time on this again?
- heyzdiggs, on 10/31/2008, -0/+12of course it was going to lose share. It was a major launch, lots of people tried it, and some stuck with it and some went back to using what they were used to. I'm sure that was expected.
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4Why? Because they can. I mean if you are a Web-based company, and you essentially have unlimited resources, why not build your own Web browser?
The other component of this is that Google really wants to pressure the other browsers to optimize performance for Web apps (among other things). I don't really think they care if their browser is #1, they just want to push the market forward.- OrangeSoda31, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4Like the third party candidates, they know that they can't win, but they sure can influence things.
- jgzman, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4Personally, I'm glad to see a company not following the rule "If at first you don't succeed, erase all evidence you ever tried."
- hoppie, on 10/31/2008, -13/+39LINUX! Starting tomorrow I'd like all software to be first released for Linux. If it's awesome, we'll never ever release it for another OS, if it sucks - we'll release some slow emulated version for Windoze 2 years later saying "coming soon!" all the while.

- piznut, on 10/31/2008, -5/+7The countless hours Ive saved trying to figure out how to make something work when it works in Windows out of the box? Great!
Not to discount linux. Its a great alternative when your time is worthless. - jamesmcm, on 10/31/2008, -8/+2Sure it takes time to learn GNU/Linux and fix the occasional bug but at least you actually learn something. Windows is an operating system for retards who don't know how computers work.
- Kwipper, on 10/31/2008, -1/+3"Windows is an operating system for retards who don't know how computers work."
And I suppose that having an overly complex operating system makes the end user a more productive person?
- freqk, on 10/31/2008, -8/+9As much as I love open source as a concept, it just doesn't work beyond anything with a large userbase.
The kernel, the window manager, the composite effects, the browsers, the file-browsers. All these work great as open source software because everyone uses them, if 2 in 10 people using something are coders, and that piece of software (open) has 1000 users, great! you have 200 devs, and mabye 50 of them will actually contribute significantly.
But once you start going beyond that; complex task-specific applications, you will NEVER (or certainly, never again) get the same level of quality in open-source, homegrown software as soemthing that has been injected money into (usually by a company)
This brings me to my next point. Open-Source can work in certain aspects of this, but the actual code cannot be homegrown. It is great for passing technology and ideas on, but it can't apply to everything.
I got a Mac recently (digg me down) after using linux for 3 years. I gave it my best shot, I couldn't stand windows, I loved the core technologies of linux. But there was a serious lack of professional software. Sure, I could do a spreadsheet in OpenOffice but there is no quality music creating applications for linux. There is no Live or Reason. The Gimp, in it's wonderful effort, never was even close to Photoshop, etc. I got a Mac because I wanted that stable solid core. (UNIX, for example) along with the profesional software and a certain ammount of polish. I didn't want to have to use the terminal on a daily basis.
i don't really know how to conclude, but being hard-core open source will go nowhere, you need corporate input to move things forward.
Anyway, this is no better then a quick draft, I'm tired and have to go to sleep, but I felt I needed to say this. It's quite buried in replies so perhaps I'll come fetch it out one day. - thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -4/+2Hello there, castrato. Run out of zit cream, did we? Your mom cut off your allowance?

- TwiZted, on 10/31/2008, -8/+3I think I'll just wait until I begin hearing good things about Chrome again. When it first came out, I almost got it to try it out until people started having problems.
- freehunter, on 10/31/2008, -2/+11So you almost downloaded a free and small application that takes zero time to learn to try because someone told you they had an issue with it, and you're going to wait until they retract that statement to actually try it? You're saving yourself five minutes, which was the amount of time you spent finding this article, clicking on it, typing in your message, and taking a sip of your Mountain Dew. There are no issues with it that will destroy you, only slightly annoy you. Oh noes.
- TwiZted, on 10/31/2008, -3/+1Yeah I know, I just don't really have the reason to download it right now. I'm perfectly happy with the browsers I use now. What I mean is I want to try it out when it's in better shape, so I don't have to go through the annoyances. I wasn't trying to be harsh or anything.
Oh, and I like typing so that's no problem for me. I'd rather type then go download it. I really don't know why.
And I'm drinking NOS, not Mountain Dew, but dang you were close! It's the same color and they both taste like crap.

- TwiZted, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6That sounds like one of the computers I worked on the other day for a buddy. I swear, his mother had installed nearly every browser I could possibly imagine on it and I have no idea why.

- prophetpimp, on 10/31/2008, -1/+11Your friends mom is awesome. Power to that women as long as she is not using IE.
- iChopPryde, on 10/31/2008, -4/+3Agree when I use someones computer look for a browser and I see Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome or any other browser I smile and am happy to use there computer. When I see IE is there only option I either immediately download Firefox or just don't use there PC unless its urgent lol
- TwiZted, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1His mom barely knows how to start the computer, literally, so I think that takes the web developer out of the question haha. I would use Firefox if the computer would actually start up, but there's so much junk installed that it freezes constantly and if it doesn't it takes about 20 minutes to start even in Safe Mode, and that's with nearly everything turned off in msconfig.

- OrangeSoda31, on 10/31/2008, -1/+28I don't think they will do that, their income is based on ads.
- skyshock1, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Given how much they support Mozilla, and how most of their ads are text-based, I doubt this is the reason. Most likely they're working on an extension model and just waiting until it works right before releasing. Getting Flash stuff working seems like it'd be a higher priority, hence the quick release of a fix.
- DougieD, on 10/31/2008, -4/+3privoxy!

Why is this story newsworthy?- Giga, on 10/31/2008, -2/+3You seriously expect Google, a company that makes money via advertisements on the web, would intentionally release a web browser that blocks their advertisements? Sure, they could just block the annoying ads and let the Google approved text based ads through, but then they would be sued for antitrust violations.
- 0xABADC0DA, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5I don't expect google to release adblock. If they have extensions at all it will be like andriod where they can kill an adblock. All I'm saying is, chrome didn't have what most users wanted, it still doesn't have it, so why digg it?
- iritegood, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Because some people are interested. If you're not, don't digg the story and move on.
- wetdirtmud, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Some people like it simple. I'm using chrome only at work because it's so much faster. For whatever reason - Firefox renders any scripts on any page very slowly. For example if I wanted to expand the comments on Digg - it would take a good 5 seconds for them to show up in Firefox 3, however they come up instantly in Chrome.
Note: It's not because the computer is slow (Dual Xeon @ 3.2ghz each - 2gb RAM - blah blah blah) it's just Firefox doesn't feel like working properly, and Chrome does.
I don't need any of the fancy protection since it's just my work computer, and I don't use many add-ons (other than stumble upon) on the machine.
- DjArcadian, on 10/31/2008, -1/+8I really love how Chrome just pops right open. Very quick book up. Makes FF3 seem ssssslow but the add-ons are keeping me with Firefox for now. I hope FF4 is as quick on bootup as Chrome is.
- paulsmith288, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3competition is good. Perhaps FF4 will do that or have something else that may be a big benefit.
- Mysk, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1in before blaming it on your plugins
- DougieD, on 10/31/2008, -2/+4I'm using the new version and for me everything renders near instantly - even starting it up right after boot up. Everything feels a lot more responsive. For a third beta? = impressed.
- majikphat, on 10/31/2008, -3/+2I finally don't need firefox for Hulu!
- fixmonster, on 10/31/2008, -2/+22Google.. please allow some integration from this other company I use all the time for bookmarking and email and such. They are called Google and I think you should talk to them. It could be a beneficial partnership!
- holyskeleton, on 10/31/2008, -3/+5Updating replaced my theme :(
- Sylenus, on 10/31/2008, -7/+8Man, this crazy feeling is coming over me, it's like I still don't care or something.
- Tyrghast, on 10/31/2008, -5/+2I think they call it beta just for laughs...
- Hecubus452, on 10/31/2008, -0/+7Smooth scrolling please!
- peestandingup, on 10/31/2008, -6/+3Looking forward to the 50th beta version.
Hey, Google. How 'bout some OS X love before that??- mmockett, on 10/31/2008, -5/+2http://media.codeweavers.com/pub/crossover/chromiu ...
- lolligator, on 10/31/2008, -4/+3This is cool. I'm really liking Chrome over Firefox for some reason. I seem to prefer simplicity and clean designs, and Chrome fits that bill perfectly. Firefox was great, but Chrome is enough for me and I prefer the look.
- keatonkeaton998, on 10/31/2008, -0/+9I'm disappointed, I thought this version was going to look like that little thumbnail image
- jeff777, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5Try clearing out your cache because mine looks just like that. I have to admit: the wings are a great addition.
- holyskeleton, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3Note: some beta 2 themes will crash beta 3.
- krisscofield, on 10/31/2008, -4/+2Give me StumbleUpon compatibility and I'm sold. Do it.
- uknowwhoibe, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1lolstumbleupon
- KnightMareInc, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5I've been using the Dev releases, it gets updated alot more often.
- MrMax99, on 10/31/2008, -0/+5PDFs still don't work right...
- thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3They never did.
- bsmang, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4That's normal.
- FelixDeluxe, on 10/31/2008, -4/+4***** adblock - don't be so tight.
Googletoolbar is the dealbreaker for me. No toolbar, no chrome. - seanwuzhere, on 10/31/2008, -4/+2Chrome
- Caliente, on 10/31/2008, -2/+6One feature I'd like in Chrome is to auto-start in Incognito. It's the only reason I bother to use the browser. Otherwise I'm in Firefox all the time.
- PKO17, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Google added this into the new release too. Just pass Chrome the "-incognito" command and it will start in incognito mode. I was upset when this simple feature was not included in the original release of Chrome but now it is possible.
- ozestrange666, on 10/31/2008, -8/+0Supposedly fixed the 'chrome has crashed' message when you close a tab that was showing PDF using Adobe Reader 9...I thought that was fixed years ago.. .
http://googleassassin.bestsellingstore1.com - d00tchy, on 10/31/2008, -5/+0Where can i pay for Chrome?
- omnithought, on 10/31/2008, -0/+9I'll give you a PO Box to send a check to.
- Spartz, on 10/31/2008, -2/+3You pay by letting Google spy on you.
- taingram, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1It will be interesting to compare Google Chrome with other browsers once their apps begin to take advantage of the new JavaScript V8 engine.
- redgorilla1, on 10/31/2008, -6/+0This guy totally expresses how us MACs feel about Google and their lack of MAC love!
http://splicd.com/hapEkoGVpII/0/20- carlnewton, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1You know, if you really believe this crummy website is worth viewing, you can always submit it as a story on digg. If it's worth anyones time, they'll digg it. You aren't going to get any clicks by spamming the comments threads.
- jamesmcm, on 10/31/2008, -1/+6Still no OS X version, still no GNU/Linux version. That means I can't run it on either of my machines (no way am I running my default browser through WINE and CrossOver)
- paulsmith288, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1ditto.
Patience is a virtue mind. Even if it doesn't come to linux , FF and Opera keep me happy so not a major issue. - thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -4/+1though it's been said, many times, many ways....... who cares?
- paulsmith288, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1ditto.
- ilgaz, on 10/31/2008, -1/+1What a good typo it is. Sliverlight. :)
(From OS X 10.4 dictionary)
Thesaurus
sliver
noun
slivers of glass | who wants this last sliver of cheesecake? splinter, shard, shiver, chip, flake, shred, scrap, shaving, paring, piece, fragment. - visarya, on 10/31/2008, -9/+1what if its fast, will it run crysis
- crgnetworks, on 10/31/2008, -2/+1wow u n00b this isnt a OS system its a website browser!!!!!
- jaywee, on 10/31/2008, -8/+3will not use it until it starts to support add-ons just like firefox...
- thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -2/+3There are things I would like Chrome to be. Then again, those same things are already doable in FF + extensions.
-autocopy text
-respect my choice of system colors
-let me sort downloads by extension
-block any and all scripts- kachayev, on 11/01/2008, -0/+0I don`t know any things, that Chorme can do better, than others do
- thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -7/+5Lot of sour apples around here. A few sore losers in the linux crowd too. People have all sorts of ways of acting out their Windows envy.
- bsmang, on 10/31/2008, -1/+5I'm a big fan of Google, and I was really excited when Chrome first came out in public, but I'm disheartened that they haven't yet released the Linux version. Excitement is pretty much gone now and it will take a while to drum it back up when the time does come.
- nick9000, on 10/31/2008, -1/+1I'm waiting for a Linus version that sucks its thumb while holding a security blanket
- ScoobyG, on 10/31/2008, -0/+2I'm not sure what the deal is about the touchpads now scrolling. It's always worked for me and I've used Chrome since the day it came out.
What I want to know is if drag and drop works.- ron7852, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1It never worked for my laptop, but it worked fine on a friends laptop. It works on some, but majority it doesn't. I can tell you from experience its a real pain in the ass and im real glad its fixed.
