- MarioBrosCom, on 11/21/2008, -5/+18It makes life so much easier to be able to browse all of my videos (in my case, mostly home videos and DRM-free movies) from my PS3. I no longer have to keep a cabinet full of VHS tapes or DVDs (though I mostly record videos to a DVD-RW now, and I import that to my PC), and that saves a huge amount of space.
- bejayel, on 11/22/2008, -4/+7My PS3 has got so much use from videos like this it is not even funny.
- ModeSeven, on 11/22/2008, -3/+18The PS3 is probably the best media hub money can buy, it'd almost be worth the money if you couldn't play games on it.
- mattyice11, on 11/23/2008, -2/+2You can say it's the best of the consoles, but something that doesn't play mkv natively can't even be in the conversation for best media hub money can buy. Popcorn Hour plays absolutely everything and costs half the price of a PS3.
http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/index.php?p ... - Tahiri, on 11/23/2008, -4/+2Install Linux and it can play mkv
- dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3mattyice11 - thanks for that dude, I have never seen the popcorn hour before. I think I will get my folks it for christmas. They could use a media hub.
EDIT: Just relised it has not disc drive for bluray or dvd - That just killed my investment. What goods a media centre without bluray or at least DVD? - mattyice11, on 11/23/2008, -2/+2@ Tahiri - if you have to install Linux and boot into it separately then it loses the convenience factor of a good media hub. The PS3 is great at media *for a console*, but it's not as good as something dedicated.
- Tahiri, on 11/23/2008, -3/+2I agree it's less convenient, but I was trying to help.
Also, PS3 can run XBMC in linux, you can't beat that
"The PS3 is great at media *for a console*, but it's not as good as something dedicated."
Actually it's better than 99% of the dedicated media hubs on the market. 99% of them don't play mkv - dandonia, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1msttyice the solution you provided has no disc drive at all. The half hour set up of linux is a one off deal and booting into it takes seconds. The PS3 is a fantastic media player solution, other than a high end pc, you are not going to find something that lets you play with your photo's, music and movies then lets you play highend games on it. Upscale DVD, Bluray, browse the internet, wirelessly stream from other machines, media card readers, etc.
Hell even the interface for skipping forward and backwards is fantastic. If you are watching something like the UFC and the fight is dull, put it in 1.5 speed, you still hear the commentating quite clearly and the fight is more fun lol.
Never have I used a better media player (except my beasty pc)
- mattyice11, on 11/23/2008, -2/+2You can say it's the best of the consoles, but something that doesn't play mkv natively can't even be in the conversation for best media hub money can buy. Popcorn Hour plays absolutely everything and costs half the price of a PS3.
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4My 360 has gotten so much use of these videos AND it plays the games on my Toshiba laptop with the XBOX controller through Media Center connect.
Not many people know that.- atchon, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5Really? Time to go search the interwebs never knew it could do that
- LedZepAddict, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2It's great, I finally got my router last week and in that time have watched Batman, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Tropic Thunder and i just began adding Arrested Development from Hulu. The streaming is great as long as your machine can handle DVD quality then it looks beautiful.
- Andrwmorph, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1Found this the other day and it works great: http://www.themediamall.com/playon
You get a two week trial and its $30 to register but it'll stream Hulu and Netflix to your PS3 which makes it totally worth it in my opinion.
- twoblackeyes, on 11/21/2008, -4/+15Amen. Can't beat TED -> Torrent -> Download Folder -> PS3. Simple as that for TV.
- marscom, on 11/23/2008, -3/+2Actually my friend you are incorrect
Newzbin Watchdog - Newsgroups - Download - X360/PS3
Your welcome- dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4cant believe you got dugg down. News groups are full speed downloads that get released early and the groups mentioned put out data in PS3/360 compatible codecs. I suppose the drawback of paying for this service is enough to put people off, but its still a better service.
- marscom, on 11/23/2008, -3/+2Actually my friend you are incorrect
- coldfusion1970, on 11/22/2008, -1/+13Excellent guide.
I already use Connect360 for my 360.- JayD16, on 11/22/2008, -3/+1Its a good guide but it left out the silver bullet. If anyone can't get something to play because of codec issues here is the end all solution.
Put linux on the PS3. Run VLC on the serving computer and the PS3 and set up the stream(plenty of tutorials around the net). If your desktop can play the video, the PS3 can show it. I use this for things like .mkv and other odd codecs.- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+6Why are you answering with a PS3 fix when he said he has a 360?
LOL fanboys. Just ramble on about Sony not even bother to look. I'm seriously choking on my cottage cheese haha.
What you are saying does sound good to me though. Don't get me wrong. mkv? That would be GREAT! - WELLDOITLIVE, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7mkv isn't a codec
- MaxD, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Has linux on the PS3 improved any? Last time I checked it out, it ran like a dog (presumably because there wasn't any real Cell processor support). VLC wouldn't even run a divx full screen for me without being really jerky.
(mind - ps3 with TVersity is pretty hard to beat). - JayD16, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3@otdvash I was commenting more on the incompleteness of the guide.
@MaxD Its not going to run Crysis but with yellow dog I can get smooth video playback. It might start to hiccup a little when you're running full 1080p but who has 1080p videos to stream?
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+6Why are you answering with a PS3 fix when he said he has a 360?
- pacman122, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Does connect360 still work good since the NXE update?
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Dunno, i always used MCE video encoder and lately the plane old 360 blades (now that it has been patched for the past year).
Everything I wanted to play except mkv and some stubborn stuff works fine. - TastyLamp, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Yep.

- sh0rtstop00, on 11/22/2008, -1/+13I just stream AVI files over wifi to my PS3, play with no problem. no need additional software, although i've tried TVersity in the past, it DLs files automatically to its program folder, even after I turn it off, it still DLs audio/video files automatically, I uninstalled that *****.
- bakatrinh, on 11/22/2008, -0/+8yeah I hate TVersity
- diggGor, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Can you elaborate a little on how you stream AVI files to a PS3 without additional software?
- GarrettGrimsley, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1VLC maybe?
- sh0rtstop00, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I use window media player, shared media, choose the folder/files you want to share, and you go to Video on the PS3, you'll see Window Vista or something, you go in, and find the file u want to play. all you really need to do is enable sharing in window media player...
- dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I went he windows media sharing route at first, then I relised how much it was slowing down my machine. Now I am back to downloading to external hdd and plugging in to the PS3. I do need a solution for .mkv though.
- emjaymj, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I have a dedicated NAS rather than an external hard drive that streams over wifi. Best of both worlds.
- EvilFerret, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Does it work with h264 and mkv files? Have been looking for a good/simple solution to stream some HD movies to the PS3....If there's an easier solution on the 360 I'd settle for that....

- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -6/+1"I have noticed that the streaming over WiFi on anything causes problems. I would suggest hard wire if you are streaming a lot."
I would suggest an Xbox 360.

- specialK16, on 11/22/2008, -5/+31.Hook up WiFi/Ethernet connection in the ps3.
- specialK16, on 11/22/2008, -1/+22Complete guide? Far from.
This article is pretty much a basic how to. The fact that all 3 systems are extremely easy to use helps of course. I was hoping this would finally give me a way to stream those large hi def .mkv files I have lying around.
(any ideas?)- SpectralSounds, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2I have been downloading HD-WMV movies lately. Just got Kung Fu Panda in HD and it looks great streamed to my 360. It sucks that I am forced to use wmv encoded HD movies though. Oh well, ***** it.
- theaceoffire, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1When I moved to Linux, I had an issue finding an easy method of converting my movies into high quality rips.
I ended up going with handbreak (Free), and using this script (It should be only two lines, but the second line is huge):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Start copy below here
#!/bin/sh
HandBrakeCLI -i /media/cdrom0 -o movie.mp4 --preset="PS3" --longest --markers --subtitle-scan --subtitle-forced --native-language eng
~~~~~~~~~~~~~Stop above here
The files are huge (Sometimes up to 3 GB), but the quality is awesome!
However, I still want to try media streaming... anyone know of a good method of streaming stuff on a debian based OS? - bejayel, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1I have been looking for something on gentoo but i havent really found anything yet. Would be nice to know. That and having my X-FI working would be good so that i can hear my sound.
- theaceoffire, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1When I moved to Linux, I had an issue finding an easy method of converting my movies into high quality rips.
- JesusHimself, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2i'm having the same issue with .mkv files on my ps3, cant find a converter on mac :(
- globalnomad, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Grab a copy of VisualHub or handbreak
- JesusHimself, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Will Handbrake convert .DTS files too?
- dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I think its about time the world started putting out PS3/360 compatible video files without requiring the downloaders to convert.
- bakatrinh, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6Use GOTSent. Easy to use, free program that takes the video and audio out of MKV files and recontain it into a readable .mp4 file. Rename the file from .mp4 to .wmv and the 360 will see the files just fine. It takes at most 5 min to convert because the program doesn't reencode the video. It just takes it out and put it in a different container.
note: If your .mkv file is larger than 4 gig you'll need to select the "split>4gb" option.- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Hmm, I like Samurai Champloo just enough to try it.
Is is still HD though? - bakatrinh, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Yes, it doesn't re-encode the video, so the video quality is exactly the same as when it was in .mkv
- holeepenguinpee, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2I've tried tversity (eats up too much cpu), doesn't rescan folders soon enough (I put 0.5 minutes and my media still doesn't show), otherwise tversity on paper looked like the perfect solution. I hope the devs tweak it in the future.
-The .debs for mediatomb on ubuntu seem to have dependency issues on 8.10, so I could never get it to run.
Basically I want a unix version of mkv2vob and then in a cron tab of every 1-5 minutes:
ls *.mkv >> mkv2vob
I think that would solve most problems. - Klucki, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1bakatrinh - "If your .mkv file is larger than 4 gig you'll need to select the "split>4gb" option."
Yeh I hate the fact that mac's use FAT32...
Oh *****, a negative comment about macs. I guess I'm about to be buried... - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1lol Tversity is garbage. That is why the article warns you not to do it if you already use MCE.
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Hmm, I like Samurai Champloo just enough to try it.
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1What are you talking about? Did you even READ the guide? The very FIRST paragraph:
"This also allows TVersity to handle files not officially supported by the 360, like MKV containers."
Sounds more than basic to me and there is the answer to your very generic question. I guess we are to assume you own all 3 consoles.- temsi, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4Err... I'm pretty sure he, like I, wants to be able to play the damn files without resorting to transcoding.
TVErsity CAN transcode, but it eats your CPU alive and can't possibly match the quality. - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -2/+1Err... he said "hoping this would finally give me a way to stream those large hi def .mkv files"
The article tells you how to do that but is HARDLY complete? What console is he using? LOL WTF?
As for the quality it doesn't seem anybody knows for sure. You can set the quality higher or lower per taste and setup - dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -1/+2Whats the point of getting the larger files to then set the quality to low?
- holeepenguinpee, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1temsi: I agree 100% *any* .mkv I stream from tversity to my PS3 sends my core2 4300 off the charts. I mean yeah it's not the fastest CPU ever, but on my PS3 I have to pause it like I'm buffering a youtube video.
- specialK16, on 11/23/2008, -2/+1@otdbash: WTF is your problem?
The article just tells you how to set it up, but does not go into details. Some of these replies were more useful than the article itself. - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Well I hate admitting when I'm wrong, but I can't even get Tversity to play my MKV files. And I did follow "THE DETAILS" carefully.
I fail. Article fails. My Samurai Champloo goes unplayed another year.
"Whats the point of getting the larger files to then set the quality to low?"
I got them because they were A) the only files available for some specific content B) I don't have a hi-def TV, only 480.. and my computer is hi-def so why not? If I could get downloads to play hi-def AND 5.1 on my stereo.. I might finally buy a good tv.
And forget netflix alltogether. - otdvash, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Oh and it is verified, Tversity (using the detailed steps provided) will stream mkv in 1080 to your tv.
You just need a good PC and network bandwith and it is possible. I'm sorry the instructions don't say "turn up the resolution to 1080" but you are a big boy and you can figure it out.
It just never worked AT ALL when I tried it lol. - specialK16, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1I believe Tversity will actually transcode the content, that's why you need a powerful PC. I guess generally you wouldn't need to worry about the speed of your network since most users will have the PS3 connected directly to their computer through 10Mb Ethernet.
It's a shame there is no SAMBA on the PS3. (maybe XBMC on the ps3 could work).
- temsi, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4Err... I'm pretty sure he, like I, wants to be able to play the damn files without resorting to transcoding.
- annenk38, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1The following works on PS3
1. get an 8gb usb flash stick (16gb for larger files, I also hear portable usb hard drives work as well)
2. get tsremux here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/TsRemux
3. open mkv in tsremux-gui
4. save in m2ts format and copy to the flash stick.
The entire process shouldn't take longer than 5-6 min.- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1"get an 8gb usb flash stick (16gb for larger files, I also hear portable usb hard drives work as well)"
So... why on god's green EARTH would somebody think they were any different? I am very curious.
P.S. inserting physical media into your console sorta defeats the purpose of all this to me. Just get up and insert a dvd already.
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1"get an 8gb usb flash stick (16gb for larger files, I also hear portable usb hard drives work as well)"
- SpectralSounds, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2I have been downloading HD-WMV movies lately. Just got Kung Fu Panda in HD and it looks great streamed to my 360. It sucks that I am forced to use wmv encoded HD movies though. Oh well, ***** it.

Get a PS3
(I officially designate myself as PS3 troll) - otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+3Sony fanboys are burying you for mere mention of the 360. Nice one kids. Grow up.
- specialK16, on 11/22/2008, -6/+3lol
- DarkStar3333, on 11/22/2008, -4/+3Dug for futurama.
- NathanCH, on 11/22/2008, -0/+13Steaming onto the PS3 (or 360 if I had one) from my PC is such a useful yet underrated feature.
- dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -3/+3Which is why the PS3 is the nicer investment, especially for the tech-challenged. You have the wireless networking fully built in and the codec support is better than the alternatives.
- MixMastaKooz, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1One thing I've learned with my ReadyNAS Duo is that it won't recognize files already in the media directory and then turn on the uPnP/Media streaming service. I downloaded the new XBL, looked at my NAS to watch/listen to media files via the XBOX, and there was no files showing. However, new files I copied over were recognized. So therefore, if you have one of these, start the media streaming service first, then copy your files to it. I'll need to re-do all 20 gigs of my music! :P
- gotjpeg, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2360 was really easy to get files to work however, it's really picky with video files. Some of the avi movies I downloaded would either not play at all or play for a few minutes and lock up and not play.
- bejayel, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3This is true. Even some avi's and "divx" encodes files i get wont work on my PS3 or my roomates 360
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Well most work for me. The only thing I get is choppiness with some that make them unwatchable.. like slo-mo video and skipping sound.
MCE video encoder will fix this for you easily. It's a stream though, so it's hard to pause and resume (well not quickly).
I am upset I can't play 5.1 DTS avi as I had been told I could. It seems to recognize them then refuses to play em. - HigherLogic, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1The only problem I've ever encountered is unsynced audio, where it's delayed by like 10-20 seconds. It's only temporary though, if I restart the move it seems to fix it. Most likely a lag from computer to the router to the Xbox when AVI movies and Divx are starting up. But yeah, being able to play movies on your console (regardless of what it is) makes any of the consoles worth the money even without the games. I've got a pretty large movie collection too, about 400GB right now, so it's nice to be able to leave them on my PC and watch them on my TV in the living room. I'll have to checkout the Netflix streaming feature too now to see how good that is :D
- wyattj, on 11/22/2008, -14/+0this would be great on a ps3, not on a xbox 360 though, complete garbage, i've had such a headache with mine.

- LastDitchHero, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I don't know who dug you down but I dug you back up. You had a valid compliant about OSS software and some people feel it shouldn't be criticized cause it is free/open. Thanks for your input.

- anononon, on 11/22/2008, -2/+16I wish Microsoft and Sony would get their arses in gear and update their codec compatibility to include .x264/.h264 in avi containers. DivX is soooooooooo last week.
- ModeSeven, on 11/22/2008, -1/+9Yeah it's kinda weird that my ***** £40 generic media player play's stuff my PS3 won't. You'd think Sony would be on top of this stuff considering they always touted the PS3 as a catch all media hub.
- thenativeraver, on 11/22/2008, -2/+27Long Live XBMC!

- staticneuron, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4"Seriously. It's odd seeing so many of the problems people have with their modern "unmodded" consoles that work fine with my old "modded" xbox."
Fixed it for you! Praise XBMC all you want but that isn't a sleight against the 360 nor the PS3 which has added functionality without you having to hack them. - dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Yeah XBMC is fantastic but the old xbox is hardly a living room thing. I wouldn't get my parents an xbox for christmas but a PS3 they can see the use for. Bluray, wireless networking, unmodded, under warrenty, etc.
- holeepenguinpee, on 11/23/2008, -1/+0I miss XBMC when using my PS3. With XBMC: .flac, .ogg, DTS wav, no internal file size limitations. Just to name a few out of a countless things that XBMC can do that the consoles are limited with (thanks in part to politics).
I love my PS3 for games, but Sony isn't renowned
for their openness when it comes to giving consumers choice with their own media.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone is running a media center (mythTV etc) on top of ubuntu on the PS3?
- staticneuron, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4"Seriously. It's odd seeing so many of the problems people have with their modern "unmodded" consoles that work fine with my old "modded" xbox."
- lowtolerance, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Honestly a better solution than any of these, if you have an XBOX or a HTPC.
- holeepenguinpee, on 11/23/2008, -0/+0Xbox1 + XBMC while awesome limits you to low definition material. It can creep near 720p for some* formats.
* "HRHD" releases on the torrents (xvid) , I believe mpeg2 can get near 720p. h.264's require much more cpu so xbox1 has a much tougher time with them. Otherwise the P3 cpu starts to chug (ram limitation too?) My apologies for footnoting the majority of my comment.
- holeepenguinpee, on 11/23/2008, -0/+0Xbox1 + XBMC while awesome limits you to low definition material. It can creep near 720p for some* formats.
- abrasion, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1I am still to this day absoloutely crushed those morons at Sony closed the GPU loophole under linux for the PS3 >:(
I was looking forward to PS3MC - HD edition under yellowdog, hell I purchased the PS3 Dec last year because there was rumours of the XBMC crew working on a PS3 port.
Then they closed the loophole and shot it down :(
I still love my PS3 but it really was a genuine reason I picked it up, playback via TVersity, WMP11 or any of those transcoding programs blows as far as I'm concerned. (DLNA = lame)
XBMC for life, virtually flawless and I mean that, really, really close to flawless.
The little Xbox that could

- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1If were going to do that, just directly plug into your 360 your damn ethernet cable from your computer and stream that way.
- dandonia, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1Yeah cos having a cable stretch right across the room is much better than copying a file to a flash drive and plugging in it.
- Klucki, on 11/23/2008, -1/+0That's easy fixed, get ***** of cable and run it along the walls. Tuck it under the carpet if you can.
20 meters of cat5 is not very expensive... - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Umm, I use a 3 foot piece. My 360 happens to be under my laptop. Not everyone's setup is the same. The one and only drawback is that it boots my laptop off the wireless network when I cram an ethernet cable in there.
That was only when I was without internet for 3 days a few months back anyhow. Works great. No buffering :D
The point is, don't be a cheapass.. just set up a network. It's very nice. No additional software or anything needed if you have media center.
You don't even need to use media center's interface. I access & browse mine just like you do music. - dandonia, on 11/24/2008, -1/+1"The point is don't be a cheapass.. just set up a network."
it's not always conveniant to have a network. Sure if you have wireless hardware then it's all cool but to run a cable under the floor and across the room, to plug into a laptop which most people move about, means you have a cable then doing nothing but looking messy. Not everyone is a lazy ass teenager in their bedroom. - otdvash, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1Not everyone has a laptop, has their xbox "across the room" or has the same setup as you. It is yet another thing that works.
Don't be a sac
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1If were going to do that, just directly plug into your 360 your damn ethernet cable from your computer and stream that way.
- dekuscrub, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3I also use Tversity for Xbox 360. It does the job.
I tried WMP, but for the life of me it just won't work. You would think that Microsoft products would be compatible with each other.- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1You need a PC with Media Center and not just WMP. The article itself says that way is wonky. WMP is still used to allow sharing with your XBOX though and picking the folders to include in the sharing.
Once you do everything, it's easy to look back and laugh at how frustrated you were setting it up but how easy it was.. just check a few boxes, (gotta know where they are) enter a code from your TV and you are done.- DarkStar3333, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1WMP11 alone works just fine assuming your able to set it up correctly. Most people forget to make the UDP firewall exceptions for the network service.
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Oh and I'm trying things your way. Tversity is sucking. I got a blank black CNN screen for their stream, some grainy Bloomberg broadcast.. and it's nearly frozen trying to scan all my "FOLDERS."
It works like a retard.. although retards are suposed to be strong. We will see. I think I'm going to back to the plane old "blades" way that I had no problems with using (and the article suggest to keep using).

- PuppetMaster202, on 11/22/2008, -2/+0Someone should tell this guy it's "The Farnsworth ParaBOX".
- boothash, on 11/22/2008, -8/+6Much easier to just hook PC up to TV play vids.
- hilanderiam, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1You know that you basically insulted their "baby" and if "she" can't do it, it's redundant. ;)
- and303, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Great guide. I didn't know about Tversity. I've been doing things the long and hard way!
- RusskiGuy, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5I've been using my PS3 for that forever. I started off streaming, but frankly, it's kind of lackluster, with serious hiccups when fast forwarding. Saving stuff on the PS3 hard drive works well though. It even remembers where you left off. For those who got a PS3 with a smaller hard drive, and don't feel like swapping hard drives, I'd recommend getting 1-2 USB thumb drives 8-16 GB (20-80% increase in storage from my 40GB). Anyway, it's pretty awesome to be able to play dvd quality stuff on my TV even from purely digital sources...
Dugg for Futurama.- jacksons98, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Another option is to just use a USB attached Harddrive. I have a 500gb drive just attached thru USB with all my photos, video and music.
- tacom8, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3geexbox on wii is really rad and totally blows the stand alone mplayer port away once you get a $10 usb to eth adaptor and start browsing your Windows / NAS / UPNP or whatever. just wish it had the pony power and resolution to do more... here's hoping someone makes a PS3 release of it for the linux partition (or XBMC??), just so we don't have to deal with UPNP and half assed converts of MKVs
- TheThirdWheel, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5OK this misses out (unless I missed the section) on streaming HD to the 360. Most movies you "find" in HD nowadays are in .mkv format. You can get a straight convertor but it can take a ridiculous amount of time to actually convert an HD movie (especially when they can get up to 9 gigs). The best way to do it is to download a free program called "GotSent". This seperates the movie and audio tracks from the .MKV container and demuxes the audio into something the 360 can recognize and then recombines it all into a .mp4. Make sure you select the box that splits any file over 4 gigs so you can stream it. This whole process takes me about 30 minutes on a 3 year old PC.
Streaming 720p movies over my wireless connection to my main TV is pure heaven.
By the way The Dark Knight is on TPB in 720P right now =)- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Uh, well most HD is mkv, first paragraph tells you how to do that.
- Acqua206, on 11/22/2008, -4/+6I have both the 360 and the PS3. IMHO, the Xbox 360 doesn't hold a candle to the PS3 as a media server. One glaring fault of the Xbox, long ass buffering times while the PS3 requires no such thing.
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+1Doesn't hold a candle?
I find the fact most people have a PC already running Windows and the fact XBOX uses Windows Media Connect to be some coincidence and works out for me well.
But to each his own.
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+1Doesn't hold a candle?
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1If somebody has any ideas for me: Using Media Center from 360. I formerly used MCE video encoder before the AVI, etc "patch." That patch is life changing!
Got RROD and they sent a refurb. Now I am REQUIRED to be logged into XBOX live to stream video from my networked computer. If I try to play it offline it says an update is required error:20254050 or whatever.
I've called the escalated support line, but they don't comprehend what I'm asking.- DarkStar3333, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2@otbdavash
Simple fix: delete the optional media update files from your system items folder.
Turn the console off.
Turn the console on and redownload them from XBL marketplace.
Issue resolved.- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1Ok thanks I'll try it. I tried clearing cache but that didn't do it.
I redownloaded it when NXE came out, it made me.. but I think you are onto something here. - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1DANGIT!! gRRR. I signed out after redoing it all exactly as you said.. it says "A media update is required to play this content. To get the update, sign in to Xbox LIVE and play the content again.
Status code:51-C00DF236
:( - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1Found this thread:
http://www.ihav.net/vb/xvid/xbox-360-status-code-5 ...
But transferring my data onto a another HDD and back and all that is WAY MORE work than this should be. The alternative is reformatting the drive, also hard work. - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1HAHA I GOT IT! Took me an hour (well 20 minutes it says here but I like an hour) and googled the status code.
Lots of rubbish, but wayyy down at the bottom it said:
"You can work around this by creating a temporary new profile with Silver membership to download the update. Once it's downloaded, you will be able to use the update with any profile."
http://www.xbox360forum.com/forum/xbox-360-console ...
What a pain. And there is actually no way to sign out of live when you have another live account (it forced me into a 30 day trial lol) and i had to reboot with the damn wireless adapter unplugged.
And its' working. Jeeesh. - Klucki, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I had the same problem. It's caused by the DRM used on the xbox 360. When you download something from XBLM, it is tied to both your gamertag and your console. The DRM lets any gamertag use the content, but only on the original console it was purchased on. If you use your profile on another xbox, it will refuse to play when any other account is signed in.
You were most likely sent a replacement console. That's why you have to sign in to verify the update was 'yours'.
I can't understand why Microsoft chose to put DRM on a system update.. - otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1lol I know. WtF? It is free to get.
Plus the license transferred fine for my Arcade Games (what DRM should be used for.. can't believe I just said that), but not a tiny update.
What a big production MS. Ease up.
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -1/+1Ok thanks I'll try it. I tried clearing cache but that didn't do it.

- dizilbdog, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2I still would like to play VLC movies on through Connect 360 someday...
- downer06, on 11/22/2008, -2/+2They forgot Play On media player all thought the support for files actually on the computer is not activated yet for play on but its great getting hulu on your ps3.
- slavetolust, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2TVersity is great but will not work with utorrent. I just ordered a network harddrive so that should be the best streaming method for the 360.
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1What happens to utorrent if I disable UnP mapping or whatever?
What is a network harddrive?
I am no noob, but apparently I have much to learn. I just got a terabyte drive set up yesterday on this network actually. It's already 2% full lol
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1What happens to utorrent if I disable UnP mapping or whatever?
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1"The gimpiest codec support of the bunch: only MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and WMV are supported."
Uhh, not really true, there is a patch for AVI and stuff. Hmm. - CompanyCalls405, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2I've been using a program called "Nero Media Home" to stream to my PS3 which is more like video editing software that happens to have a media sever attachment. It can play 30 minute episodes with a couple half a second hiccups which is ok but movies cant go 10 minutes without stopping for a few seconds or more which for me is unacceptable and drives me crazy. I'll try Tversity as soon as my brother gets off dead space =P
Thanks for the article.- Klucki, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Nero is full of crap you don't need. It's probably the most bloated program around.
Seriously, re-install it and uncheck every other program in the installer bar Nero Burning ROM. Then go to Start > Run > type 'msconfig' then hit enter, goto the 'services' tab and uncheck 'NMIndexingService' and 'NMAccessU'.
Nero Indexing constantly searches and indexes your hard drive for faster searching through its toolbar that you will never use. Kill it, its slow and pointless.- CompanyCalls405, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Yeah I got rid of that *****...TVersity works like a charm, no skips or anything.

- rogueyak, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Anyone got any ideas on what to do if I'm having a hard time getting my PS3 to recognize my thumb drive? It's just not showing up:(.
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -4/+1Get a 360.
- MaxD, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1The file system on the thumb drive needs to be FAT32, perhaps?
- otdvash, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Ok, why is Tversity trying to install and ask.com toolbar? When will the internet ever be fixed?
I suddenly crave sweet tarts.. odd - kanundrum, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I have been trying to find a way to play my files on the 360 for a couple months (I've done a number of things but for one reason or the other the more involved solutions didn't suite me) so the guide is a god send to say the least. I started using PlayOn last week and I must say I thought it couldn't get better than watching Hulu on the 360. If video get's just a bit more accessible I can chuck the cable service and rely on the internet!! (then again the cable company also provides my internet so no such luck)
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1if only you could tap into streams like Shoutcast/Winamp TV stuff. Hmm
- solid12345, on 11/23/2008, -1/+2Anyone else ***** HATE MKV's? I mean no hardware plays it, and if I am going to spend 20 minutes playing with settings to convert it back to an AVI to play on my Xbox or PS3 I would rather just buy the goddamn DVD.
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1I don't hate them. It was basically the first and only way I got HD content.. and I guess still is. Oh well.
Maybe the next-gen consoles will play them. I'll tuck them away in my safe deposit box until then. - Andrwmorph, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1Isn't MKV more of a media container than a codec?
- bxbomber, on 11/26/2008, -0/+0http://www.popcornhour.com/onlinestore/
built in torrent downloader, built in usenet downloader and it plays mkv file
you can thank me later on

- thatonekid393, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Awesome! I haven't tried it out on my PS3 yet, but my iPod Touch and PSP can both do it flawlessly. Never knew about TVersity before!
- otdvash, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Tversity is junk dude. watch out.
- patrick159, on 11/24/2008, -0/+0Yes this is great. now i can stream videos on my ps3. I dont need it for my 360 because of windows media center.oh yea check out my profile.
