- orangederange, on 11/21/2008, -1/+6Interesting! I wonder what could be some other causes of increased levels of kynurenic acid...
- TheMachine1, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kynurenic_acid#Role_i ...
"High levels of kynurenic acid have been identified in human urine in certain metabolic disorders, such as marked pyridoxine deficiency and deficiency/absence of kynureninase."
pyridoxine = b6- orangederange, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Also interesting from the wikipedia article:
"High levels of kynurenic acid have been identified in patients suffering from tick-borne encephalitis, schizophrenia and HIV-related illnesses."

An over-active type-2 immune response.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18655201
An infection perhaps.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18537668
"COX-2 inhibititors have been tested in animal models of depression and in preliminary clinical trials, the latter showing favourable effects compared to placebo, both, in schizophrenia and in major depression."
Basically any thing causing a type of inflammation in the brain might result in elevated kynurenic acid. I wonder if omega-3 fats and vitamin D might be useful?
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18587166
"There is evidence from double-blind placebo-controlled trials that omega-3 fatty acids might prevent conversion from a prodromal state into first episode psychosis, and reduce the antipsychotic drug requirement in first episode patients. Results in chronic and acutely relapsing schizophrenia have been mixed."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17688466
"Hyperthermia in utero due to maternal influenza is an environmental risk factor for schizophrenia."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17156062
"There is compelling evidence that low vitamin D levels lead to increased risk of developing rickets, osteoporosis and osteomaloma, 16 cancers (including cancers of breast, ovary, prostate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma), and other chronic diseases such as psoriasis, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart disease, myopathy, multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, hyperparathyroidism and susceptibility to tuberculosis."- orangederange, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3@TheMachine1 Great Info! I just wanted to highlight the vitamin D levels or deficiencies... I'm hearing a lot more about this in recent. More and more doctors recommending taking Vitamin D supplements.

- seltaeb4, on 11/21/2008, -5/+2WHAT? Who said that?
Leave me alone, damn you! All of you! - tawnos, on 11/21/2008, -4/+1That's not what my friend that no one else can see says.
- adolfojp, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2God?
- hurrayforschool, on 11/21/2008, -3/+1We would like to take time away from building the spaceship to thank you for discovering the origin of my disease. We must return to work or I will be beaten by myself for slacking on the job. The invasion is coming, unless it's already here.
- freakFlag, on 11/21/2008, -2/+0I'm popular!
- audreysee, on 11/21/2008, -1/+0Now that they found the problem of what causes it, will they find the cure yet?
- eitup, on 11/21/2008, -2/+1You kids get off my ahhhh ahhhh ahhh lawn.
- FryerJF, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3A lot of good information, which can be verified by searching for other studies, can be found at http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/ if you are interested in Vitamin D. I've been taking 5,000 IU a day (skipping a day every weekend) for over a year with no issues.
- oninbonin, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2"The research was to be presented Nov. 18 at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington, D.C." - That's awesome because one of my relatives was a speaker at this a coule days ago!
- Phazeless, on 11/21/2008, -4/+1This is awesome. We can fully expect to have mental illness in rats under control in our lifetimes.
- kevL0CK, on 11/21/2008, -3/+3sure, solve schizophrenia. but which personality will they choose? good...... or.... EEEEEVIL?!
i'm poking fun. it's a friday, relax. - Frostek, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Can we get some mandatory testing for those chemtrails guys off youtube please?
- wakananda, on 11/21/2008, -2/+2Chemtrails are damned strange. I'm old enough to remember the sky before 1998, and contrails did NOT used to appear in lengths of boli (the "donuts on a rope" form of trail that suggests compressed particulates). They did NOT used to fan out into cloud cover that subsequently covered the sky in a grey haze. And they did NOT use to display bizarrely shifted spectra (not normal "rainbows") like airborne oilslicks. 'Trails today look like old textbook examples of "cloud seeding." There has been a big change, and there has been no explanation (in terms of fuel additives, etc.). Some of us (of those who have noticed at all) are very curious, others are paranoid, and some want to stick their heads in the sand. You can tell the latter by their bitter irritation with either of the former.
- Frostek, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Really? You can remember the sky from *over ten years ago*. That's certainly impressive!
(Hey, you others - run the test on him whilst I keep him talking!)

- SeniorScrapper, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0An excessive amount of the compound interferes with other chemical processes involved in the ability to pay attention and think strategically under changing circumstances.
