- bamapachyderm, on 11/13/2008, -4/+21Nice eye candy - especially with there being no godawful Annie Leibowitz in it. :D
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 11/14/2008, -2/+7What's wrong with Leibowitz?
- isukeyo, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2She's a good photographer, but that's about it! She's highly overrated (as is often the case with celebrity artists - her work is less impressive and important than her name) when compared to so many other talented photographers out there. If you've got any small art gallery's where you live, chances are you'll find some unknown/little known photographers with significantly more talent and vision than Leibowitz! As a matter of fact, you could probably find a significant number or photographers on flickr and photo.net and photosig.com that are more talented. But then again, art is subjective (mostly!).
- fwertz, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1Is it the nose that bothers you?
- cathpah, on 11/14/2008, -1/+5i don't think anything is *wrong* with Annie Leibowitz, but given the talent of so many other contemporary photographers, it gets a little tiring seeing Annie Leibowitz as such a household name because of some nice, yet DAMN simple, portraits of celebrities.
For many people, they can only name 2 photographers: Ansel Adams, who we're still learning from, and Annie Leibowitz...who is FAR from the 2nd greatest photographer out there.- hansning, on 11/14/2008, -3/+2i, as a photographer, don't find leibowitz's portraits to be simple at all...
- thopunk, on 11/14/2008, -3/+3so portraits are only good if they are "difficult"? interesting.
- cathpah, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1no, they aren't only good when they are difficult....but when separating one's self as a "master" it sure helps if you're able to show off skills that only you may have. While creating an image is never easy, so much of what Annie Leibowitz does is photographing beautiful celebrities, and when comparing the difficulties that go into that against truly fantastic studio work or serious travel/street portraiture....the latter certainly proves itself to be more of a challenge. That doesn't mean she's not any good (she definitely IS)....it just shows that many other photographers have to push themselves a lot harder/further to create beautiful images without the advantage of most of them being created around already beautiful people.
And I, as a photographer, DO find liebowitz' portraits simple. Does that mean they aren't good? No. Does that mean she maybe hasn't fully earned her reputation as the number 1 household name in contemporary photography? maybe.
Do you think most people know here because they've seen a great picture and then seen her name in the bottom corner, or is it because her name is often plastered on the front of esquire/rolling stone/etc? Oh, and that miley cyrus bit didn't hurt her celeb status either.....(even though i do think those who faulted her for that are smoking crack...it's art people!)
I'm just saying that there are so many other AMAZING contemporary photographers. It strikes me as odd that she is probably the most famous out of the bunch.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 11/14/2008, -2/+7What's wrong with Leibowitz?

- minnymoo, on 11/14/2008, -7/+2absolutely gorejizz.
- crazzy88ss, on 11/14/2008, -6/+54Some of these should be relabeled "photoshop masters."
- ninzoris, on 11/14/2008, -2/+5So should we start looking at the film photographer masters and start relabeling them as darkroom masters?
- DurtyJ, on 11/14/2008, -1/+3Yes.
- pantoneGhost, on 11/14/2008, -1/+0film, negative, classic, anything to clearly differentiate the two.
- cathpah, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2@ pantoneghost
why? what would that change/improve/help? - crazzy88ss, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Well there's a difference between photoshop touch up, and something that's clearly been manipulated beyond what a camera can produce.
- namman, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1I wholeheartedly agree, crazzy88ss. For example, the picture with the girl sitting on the front porch.
WAY too much HDR effect to be anywhere near realistic
Master photographers are the ones who can create stunning pictures without photoshop.
I have a lot more respect for the ones who can do amazing editing in the darkroom than the ones who use photoshop.
Any 9 year old can torrent CS3 and learn how to edit photos well
- Atalaya, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1Katarinka's one with the daisies is a manipulation. The daisies are stock images. Go to her DeviantArt.

- Henrikdons, on 11/14/2008, -1/+7I miss Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helmut Newton and W. Eugene Smith
- trevordj, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Yes, the decisive moment. But then there's also William Eggleston, Lee Friedlander, Brassai, Robert Cappa, or Elliot Erwitt. And yes, I like the Magnum Photographers. I'd rather see a link with those because I just can't Digg these as much.
- NNik, on 11/14/2008, -1/+30Lots of those are reaallly corny. Masters?
- Dradis, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Agreed. A lot of them look like something from iStockPhoto ( http://www.abduzeedo.com/files/paulo/20masterphoto ... ) in particular.
- 3zero3, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Sigh. It's Peter Yang, not Young.
- DeskFlyer, on 11/14/2008, -9/+9Ansel Adams remains the only true Master of Photography.
- 3zero3, on 11/14/2008, -2/+2Landscape photography maybe..
- thopunk, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1.....to people who know little to nothing about photography.

- OsiVert, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Only true master? No. He was a master during his time because he had to hike all of his gear around to places not many people had known about.

- diggB, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4I found it refreshing that most of these images were portraits as opposed to your typical landscape/nature shots that typically makes it onto digg.
- scareyh22a, on 11/14/2008, -3/+8Holy high contrast Batman!
- pantoneGhost, on 11/14/2008, -2/+14Masters is a strong label,
Digital did alot to change photography, to the point where the old masters have nothing to say to the new photographers.
the photography process, from start to stop is completely different. and i cant agree with this website. They have nice photos but are in no way masters. Masters take years of dedication and will probably die before they even get the label of master.
Buried. no question about it.

Typically, if a comment has value, there is no need for someone viewing it to respond, as there is no better way to state the above mentioned point. Unfortunately, 4 words at the bottom of your post lead people like myself to mock your apparent disinterest in the opinions of fellow digg users by making a very lengthy response, going into minor detail about how I am responding to your request not to respond. - superswellguy, on 11/14/2008, -1/+0I

- HiddenLYNX, on 11/14/2008, -0/+8I wouldnt go so far as to say masters, because they havnt really pushed everything to change the field. Ansel Adams is a master, but few know his teacher Alfred Stiegliz who pushed to make photography accepted as a tool, field, and something more than a hobby. Alberto Korda got lucky with his shot of Che, and I honestly think Che is overrated and his popculture status is definitely not what he wanted.
- spepin, on 11/14/2008, -1/+8Masters? Most of the are just using RAW images and some tone mapping.
Where's Karsh, or Adams? - Inaktivist, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2I liked a lot of them, very nice. But where's StuckInCustoms? : )

- BruceAnderson, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1*THANK* you! I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. It's not to say he's exactly mimicking Avedon, but he's definitely cribbed Avedon's technique for those pictures.
- thopunk, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1that's an insult to avedon!
- tunafizzle, on 11/14/2008, -0/+15What about anyone from VII photo? Dahl-Wolfe, Ansel Adams, Dave Duncan, Furuya, Lartigue McCullin, Friedlander, Felix Man, Henri-*****-Cartier-Bresson? The "Decisive Moment"?!!!!? Jesus ***** Christ.
C'mon Abduzeedo blows ass, it's all photoshop and fake HDR ***** anyway. Who keeps submitting their articles.- trevordj, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6I dugg this because I made almost the same comment above as a reply to Henrikdons
- tunafizzle, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Friedlander is definitely one of my favorite street photographers and thank you for backing me up on "the decisive moment" since it's one of the most important concepts to learn to be an adequate photographer.
Magnum photo kicks ass as well. Are you familiar with http://viiphoto.com/ ? I'm guessing you are, but if not check out the link, they do alot of amazing work.

- mmg81, on 11/14/2008, -1/+4I'm getting a kick of out this since I'm a great friend of Pouya. Some of these guys are great photographers some are mediocre at best. Hell Pouya is 25 and Joey Lawrence is 19. They both have amazing talent and are emerging photographers but far from "master." I'm actually insulted for Pouya to be listed on the same page the one trick pony, David Hill.
For a more accurate masters of photography, check this site:
http://www.masters-of-photography.com/
Any masters of photography list that doesn't have HCB, Gene Smith, Avedon, Karsh, or Robert Frank... is not an accurate list. - hartley, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Is part of being a photography master taking pictures of incredibly weird looking people?
- mmg81, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3Sure if you are talking about Diane Arbus.
- tunafizzle, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1I love that classic shot by Arbus with the child holding the hand grenade with a quite insane facial/body expression.

"Woah!" (said with flannel shirt tied around waist as blossom stands next to him) - robmizelldotcom, on 11/14/2008, -0/+5I wouldn't excatly call these people "masters"
- harajukukei, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1umm... terry richardson.
- Intercon, on 11/14/2008, -0/+4Weak.
Jesh de Rox!? So weak. How about Diego Uchitel, Alistair Taylor-Young, Phil Poynter, or hell, even Dusan Reljin? While a lot of fashion photography is *****, these blokes are making quality work. And they all happen to be great to work for as well, especially Diego.
Buried for a weak aesthetic that mistakes cheesy graphic design for good photography, and for lack of knowledge about the photography industry. I'm with tunafizzle... - thopunk, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3are you kidding me? more like "masters of flickr style photographers".
- DejectedRobot, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1Dugg for the picture of Protest the Hero.
- nickbrewer, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1i don't understand it. just so everyone knows. i don't feel like I deserve to be on a list like this. i am still very new to photography, barely even call myself a photographer and in no way consider myself a master. i luck out with most of my shots. they make me look like i know what i'm doing! ha! there are many people out there that should have made this list WAY before me! it's good to know there are people that dig my stuff though. thanks.
- fatcat125, on 11/14/2008, -0/+3no richard avedon?! these pics are like top pics of the week for flicker, not photography MASTERS!

- jaydedragon, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2okay weird i know.. but the pic of the guy punching the other guy.... hot... and the girl in the red kimono
- luke16, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1The only true photographer on that list is Alberto Korda. The rest rely heavily on photoshop and post processing.
Give me the work of Joel Meyerowitz, Robert Frank or Gary Winogrand any day. - born2dream, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2Even if they aren't masters of photography, I'm way too far from being anything like them. So instead of being so cynical, how about all of you show some appreciation of the work by these photographers? I wish I could be at least half as good as any of them, really. These people have talent, admit it, whether they are or are not the masters.
Definitely dugg. - greydream, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1Not even close.
- OsiVert, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1I guess to be considered a master you only need to be able to use hdr, turn up your saturation or use studio lighting.
- marioara, on 11/14/2008, -0/+1awesome photography
- louis35, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0funny strawberry :)
- ryusen, on 11/14/2008, -0/+0Some of them were very good photographs and some were more representations of digital art. I do both. Nothing wrong with the later, unless you try and pretend it's the former.
- phoenixkiula, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1The page is 404?
