- sungoddess808, on 11/10/2008, -1/+23I heartily agree with the "don't buy it on EBay" comment. Out of four batteries I've bought there, three have failed within two months, one right out of the box.
- ileftfark, on 11/11/2008, -0/+14Kind of makes you wonder why you bought the last three... just an optimist? ;)
- nowhereelse, on 11/11/2008, -0/+5They were bargains, dammit.
- nurbsenvi, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2probably cost 5$ altogether
- Botrax, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2WOW, as if Ebay was the source of batteries and not the particular vendors selling on there. If you buy from a good seller, you're fine. Ebay is not the problem, but the crappy vendors you may get on there.

- toby78, on 11/10/2008, -6/+6laptop battery is not the place to go bargain basement hunting. Too much chance of getting something so bad it fries your computer or worse causes a fire! Sometimes it's better to get Quality rather then a bargain
- ileftfark, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6Like a quality battery, directly from Sony.

- ileftfark, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6Like a quality battery, directly from Sony.
- sodade, on 11/10/2008, -0/+4*****. Even the cheap place they mention in the article wants $120 for an old thinkpad battery. I now own three ***** laptops that have dead batteries. In all cases, it would be a waste of money to buy spendy replacement batteries.
- Hypnotical, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1try stealing a battery :')
- thebigbradwolf, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Sounds like you have 3 great computers for linux servers ;-)
- sodade, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2I've tried to boot four different lightweight linuxes on my Toshiba Satellite and they all fail to boot properly :(

FTW - chaoswings, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1No offense to anyone but for a battery you have to buy around every 2-3 years $120 is not THAT terrible. Plus they last long enough (well maybe a bit short) that by then you need a better laptop to run the new stuff anyway.
- DeskFlyer, on 11/11/2008, -0/+12It's only risky when the battery explodes into flames during your flight.
- Matt174e, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Especially if you're not white.
- alvaris, on 11/11/2008, -3/+2if they sell, that must be something evil inside lol. :D
- commentposted, on 11/11/2008, -0/+3They don't make batteries like they used to. My old inspiron 8200 held a decent charge for 4 years of me abusing it, and my new xps m1210 6 cell held a decent charge for a single year without me abusing it. Don't get an xps m1210, their batteries die right after the 1 year warranty expires. But I did buy a new 9 cell off ebay and it works great. For how long, we have yet to see...
- computershack, on 11/11/2008, -3/+1Longer than the Dell one. Dell include a counter that automatically "kills off" the batteries' ability to charge after a preset number of cycles regardless of battery condition. Dell claim that "it's to ensure a consistent experience for the end user", neglecting to mention they'll sell you a replacement for half the original cost of the laptop.
- PacketPaul, on 11/11/2008, -1/+4As they say in wikipedia ... citation needed.
- infection0, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1AFAIK printer companies do it to their toners... my dell one included... so why the hell not, those sick sonsofbitches.
- vilago, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1don't get a dell in general. most people i know get the cheap dells, the computer works ok for about 2 years, then it "magically" starts to slow down with no hint of spyware or viruses. even after a defrag still the damn thing moves at a snails pace.
- Lancer383, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2Back up what you need, format the drive, and put a fresh copy of Windows on it. Back to normal.

- Volatile36, on 11/11/2008, -1/+1This is also a problem with Li-Ion batteries in general. We need to develop new battery technology, especially if we desire to become untethered from power outlets and fossil fuel engines.
- scabbers, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1The ebay ones are nasty countereits filled with bits of old brick and ni-cads.
- ultrafez, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Not always. I bought mine from eBay (and paid a decent price for it as well) and it's served me well - it's an official Dell part.
- asgardshill, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1What some bright spark needs to invent is a kit that would allow you to connect a gel cell or sealed medical device battery (both are a darned sight cheaper than a factory battery) to your laptop. It could just be a little bit of plastic and connectors, customizable for whichever laptop you have.
- Crana, on 11/11/2008, -0/+6eBay batteries are magical. I bought one for my brothers Acer Aspire and noticed it only showed 30 minutes remaining in the task bar, I told him this and he said "No, it's wrong, watch this" he then shook the laptop and then it in increased to 2:33
- vilago, on 11/11/2008, -0/+8that's because it's really an etch a sketch
- zadadka, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1In many cases, it is the laptop battery's charging circuit that fails, not the battery's ability to deliver volts....but, being sealed units, there's nothing that can be done.
Laptop manufacturers are missing out on a more viable (because cheaper) parts revenue by making the charging circuit a snap-in part external to the battery unit itself.- brainflakes, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Lithium ion batteries lose their capacity over time, especially when running hot / fully charged.
If you're not going to use your laptop / ipod / whatever for a while leave the battery half charged, it'll last longer that way.

- nurbsenvi, on 11/11/2008, -2/+1Get a Sony battery see it explode on your lab
JACKPOT!!
Make sure you film it tough. - pigfister, on 11/11/2008, -2/+2Lets ask Sony!
KA-BooM!!!!!
*edit* nurbsenvi, dam beat me to it by 30 secs... - jamdogg, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1Wait. This article doesn't even once mention how great Kevin Rose is. And what is this "technology" category? I thought this was digg.
- majortom1981, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1The article doesnt mention that sometimes you are stuck buying a cheap replacement because the manufacturer of your computer stops selling the batteries.
Example. My acer aspire 1691wmli notebook that i gave to my gf to use needs a new battery but acer stopped stocking it and has been out of stock for months.
So I am stuck looking for a replacement battery somewhere else. Probably at one of the sites that this article recommends. - KenSPT, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I'd never buy a battery off eBay, but have looked into both of those sites he mentioned when looking for a replacement battery for my notebook. Sadly, my notebook battery died a month or so ago and I've been running it on AC Power ever since ... I'm just too damn lazy to actually purchase the battery I need, which is all sorts of sad.
- brainflakes, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I bought a cheap acer battery of Amazon and it's worked perfectly, has better capacity then the original too. Not sure I'd trust ebay for a laptop battery but then the mobile phone battery I got for a fiver's been fine so far (checks pocket for flames)
- snafflepaffle, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1The probem i've had with cheap batteries is that they don't get as many charge cycles. The two that I've bought only got a hundred cycles or so before they started to decline rapidly. After about 150 cycles they wouldn't take a charge at all and had to be re-replaced.
- mathewajith, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0Thanks for the great article, I have been looking to buy a replacement battery for my Macbook Pro and now I know where I can potentially find one.
- peterinjapan, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1a) got a laptop with one battery
b) got an iPhone, for when my battery dies
c) got a book to read
That's enough. - Br3ach, on 11/11/2008, -0/+1I would think it is obvious that if you buy a cheap battery from eBay or anywhere, dont expect much. Can't buy tin and expect gold.
- emazur, on 11/11/2008, -0/+2I once bought an aftermarket battery for a Presario 1210 laptop. It was only about $50 while the official battery was going for $250 to $300. It worked but wouldn't charge correctly. It would charge for 1 or 2 minutes and then stop, and if I wanted it to charge further I had to reinsert the battery. So I sent it back, and ordered a 3rd party battery from another company but same story. I though I was out of luck but found the solution. In Japan there's a company:
http://www.batterymart.jp/
that offers a "battery refresh service". Basically, you send them your old battery, they put fresh battery cells into your battery's casing and then ship it back to you. And actually they advertise a 22% increase in performance compared to a new battery from the manufacturer (don't know if it's true b/c I bought that laptop used and never knew how long the original battery would last). But the important thing is the battery worked great, and their service is great. There is a company in America that does the same thing but I had a very bad experience with them 3 years ago:
http://www.batteryrefill.com/index.phtml
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/eBattery_Inc_ ...
They are still around, but as you can see their reseller ratings are *****. They ignored all my emails after I paid them and wouldn't respond until I threatened them with legal action, and finally they refunded my money (in this case I wasn't sending them my old battery but I was supposed to be buying a battery they had already reconditioned, but they never sent it). So you're rolling the dice if you deal with them, but maybe other similar companies have popped up in the US since then - JacksonYaya, on 11/11/2008, -0/+0I've got a 1st gen XPS that needed new batteries, so I bought cheapies. They work OK but the most demanding games slow down on battery power now where they didn't with the original batteries. :(
- dig1104, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0I need a apple laptop battery and wanna save money indeed. but i found the "cheap" replacement battery is not cheap at all. The apple g4 battery cost 99.99
List Price: $139.99
Our Price: $99.90
You Save $40.09!
I never get a replacement laptop battery than 80$
So i googled "apple power g4 battery" ( http://www.sales-battery.com/Apple_PowerBook_G4_ba ... ) it only cost US $ 67.74 and 30 days money back guarantee included. - batteryland, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0here: http://www.laptopbatteryweb.com/ will tell you more.
- greenbattery, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0I'll choose the cheap replacement one ,because i don't think a cheap replacement battery pack a risky deal, some business company willing give the customer a satisfied service though their battery are not very good for every item. They also look forward to get well day by day.
If you believe that, please support this site: http://www.battery-info.net - johnsunvalley, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1ok, i agree with your opinon, or you can go here to get your answer: http://www.babatek.com
