- HonoredMule, on 11/19/2008, -6/+1I'll never understand why people are so obsessed with computers being able to play a game that was pretty boring for /humans/ to play and was primarily single player anyway.
- Ommatidia, on 11/19/2008, -1/+7Because it is a realistic, non-synthetic benchmark that can bring even the best gaming machines to their knees.
Telling me that one GPU can run Quake 3 at 240 fps and another can run it at 320 fps is useless, as I'll never notice the difference. However, telling me that one GPU will run Crysis on "Very High", 0xAA, 0xAF, at a resolution of 1900x1200, and give me 24 fps and another GPU will give me 32 fps. Well... now you're giving me differences that I can see. - HonoredMule, on 11/19/2008, -6/+1I fail to see how whether a system can [blinky]*(important word)*PLAY*(/important word)*[/blinky] a game of any kind is a benchmark of anything but artificial intelligence software.
/hoping you were you paying attention this time - HonoredMule, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Apparently no one comprehends the difference between /playing/ a game (what I do) and /running/ it (what my computer does)?
- Ommatidia, on 11/19/2008, -1/+7Because it is a realistic, non-synthetic benchmark that can bring even the best gaming machines to their knees.
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Realistically, how many cores can Crysis take advantage of? The recommended specs for the game are only a dual core system.
- HonoredMule, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Like every major game produced to date, it is almost entirely single threaded, meaning the only advantage of having even a 2nd core is not having unrelated software or the core system syphon resources away from the game.
As pathetic as it may be, that old VB app you once had to use to do form entry was probably the pinnacle of of concurrency support in a desktop application, just by having the UI handled in a separate thread so the whole screen wouldn't freeze while processing.
- HonoredMule, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3Like every major game produced to date, it is almost entirely single threaded, meaning the only advantage of having even a 2nd core is not having unrelated software or the core system syphon resources away from the game.

- damack, on 11/19/2008, -11/+35This isn't designed for gaming at all it's just based on Nvidia's gaming GPU's but it is intended for an entirely other crowd than the gaming one.
- strictnein, on 11/19/2008, -0/+73The point is that if it wasn't for gamers paying $500 for video cards, Nvidia wouldn't have the resources to build GPUs that are ultra powerful.
FTA: "The gamers of the world are paying for the development of that stuff. If we can hitch ourselves to that train as it thunders past, that's very attractive."- sexybobo, on 11/19/2008, -3/+20Yes now i can justify buying a 280 i am buying it to help further scientific research.

it shouldn't be spun like they've had anything to do with it anymore than being a walking sack of resource money. - sinrtb, on 11/20/2008, -1/+5Its also the fact that we are pushing the technology by asking for better vid cards and wanting higher res graphics. Calculating more polys is te same as folding at home or any other high volume floating point op.

- HonoredMule, on 11/19/2008, -2/+30You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Obsolete means no longer used or useful. The mere existence of a faster or more powerful computer is not even close to the same thing as being obsolete.- Arasaka, on 11/19/2008, -0/+15Thank you for pointing that out. I hate it that every tiny increment in technology supposedly makes its predecessors "obsolete". That's not what it means!
- alperea, on 11/19/2008, -7/+2Obsolete obsolete obsolete obsolete obsolete.

- SchmuckofNI, on 11/19/2008, -1/+1Trouble is, directx 11 is just around the corner so plopping down 10 grand for something that doesn't run directx 11 stuff is a waste.

- LordKaT, on 11/19/2008, -13/+37I know some people might drop their mouths at the $9,995 pricetag, but when you cosnider that some 4 core, three video card gaming computer can cost upwards of $20,000 ... that's really impressive.
- schnikies79, on 11/19/2008, -5/+10...And really expensive.
- mdoverkill, on 11/19/2008, -3/+40A 4 Core 3 video card gaming computer is not going to cost 20,000. A 4 Core 3 video card computer using workstation-class cards like the Quadros for FireStreams wouldn't even hit 20,000.
It's been years since companies were making $20,000 workstations. - RicktheBrick, on 11/19/2008, -1/+7The cost of the computer will probably be very small in comparison to the cost of programming it. Programs for this computer will not be used by millions of people so the cost per user will be much greater. I would think that the buyer of this computer would have their own programming department to develop programs specific to that company.
- Monkey12, on 11/19/2008, -4/+4If you don't shop newegg it will.
- Quiwi, on 11/19/2008, -0/+9Or consider the fact that most labs can easily drop 50k-100k+ on a single piece of lab equipment and a sub 10k seems cheap by comparison.

- KSUdesigner, on 11/19/2008, -0/+8The average Joe Blow doesn't have 10 grand to drop for one of these, so I don't think that's really an issue.

I can't wait to see the next major breakthrough in storage technology.- vertigo32, on 11/19/2008, -4/+2Why not use RAM for storage? It doesn't need to be DDR3 or anything fancy / high end, but for the prices that good SSD technology is going for you should be able to get a comparable amount of DDR memory.
You can still use a standard HDD as a backup in case of a power outage and for bulk storage, but have the OS and your swap files on this RAM drive. There is still an initial bottleneck copying program files and such from the HDD to the RAM drive, but once it's copied it's going to be as fast as your interface.- duewydo, on 11/19/2008, -1/+11vertigo32 I think you just made your own self defeating point. At some point the computer must be powered down. The hard drive already acts as your backup and your ram already acts like your fast storage. Our current system design works like this. [stable, retaining storage] - [Faster, power dependent storage] - [CPU processes].
What you just proposed was:
[fast, power dependent storage] - [Faster, power dependent storage] - [CPU processes].
What you need is a fast stable non power dependent storage device. I don’t care what people say, if everyone switched to 1TB of SDRAM to replace their HD and just used a battery to keep it alive, the price of SDRAM would skyrocket.
rant... - Harabeck, on 11/19/2008, -1/+3Wasnt there an article on digg not too long ago about a new type of transistor, that if they managed to make it could remember it's state without active power? - Prism123, on 11/20/2008, -1/+1because ram loses all its data when its powered down, as the poster pointed out memresistors could solve his potentially.

- UNL1M1T3D, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2How is the motherboard, something that lets all the components interface with one another, going to replace one of said components? A more accurate statement would be the GPU or graphics card replacing the CPU.

- tictacns, on 11/19/2008, -4/+2Apparently it will run XP and some Linux. Also, a little over 20 years ago, a simple desktop PC ( I think it was a 386 ) was priced at $9,000, so $10,000 does not seem too bad for this. However, just like in the '80s, I am not going to run out and get one of these, but I do want one :-)
- MikeFallopian, on 11/19/2008, -5/+86There is a recently-released game called Crysis that requires very high-end hardware in order to run properly. I wonder if this computer would meet the extreme hardware demands of Crysis, and thus run the game smoothly on the highest performance settings?

- cesig, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1How would this work as a rendering workstation?
- OBKenobi, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3The software you use needs a plugin to support GPU processing. There isn't much support for this yet, but it's coming in 2009. It's going to be much faster than using a CPU once the major 3D packages support GPU processing. Even a single Geforce 8xxx or better would be faster than a C2D quad core.
- Remelox, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2Depends on what you mean.
Rendering, not much better.
Edit ting? It's awesome. Especially if you use Physix supported software like parts of 3D Max are. The more powerful the graphics cards, the faster you can set your physics based animation. Once the physics are done, you can run the animation to check that everything looks right. The quicker that you can run through that loop, the quicker you can fix errors or move on to the next section.
The problem with the rendering is that the math used in ray-tracing is not the math used in games. There is some cross-over but apparently not a lot. Now, someone comes along and makes ray-tracing card (there are people trying) and you're in business. - steviesteveo, on 11/19/2008, -0/+3It's not exactly suitable for a single user's desktop since one user isn't going to keep the 960 cores working at full speed, it'd be an amazing workstation with a picky sense of software. You'd have to write or find your own highly parallel programs. You wouldn't just load a game up because it wouldn't know to use all the cores.
Having written a program for a particular use, it then sits under the desk in a lab or studio and crunches vast amounts of data very quickly. The interesting thing is when it clusters up, because it does it very cheaply for the ~4Tflops each box gives you. If you need more power - buy another one, double up the figures on your render farm software and it still won't dim the lights when they turn on.- UNL1M1T3D, on 11/19/2008, -0/+2But it would be cool if it dimmed the lights.
- steviesteveo, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1God DAMN it would be. It's the sort of thing that you'd have to make play the Windows start up tune a second or two later, just for effect.
- magus_melchior, on 11/19/2008, -0/+86"costs less than $9,995"

- justdbc, on 11/19/2008, -0/+21Just to add a little perspective here, unfortunately giving away my age: I spent a large part of the past 30 years as a CPU designer. In the mid 1980's I was working on a mainframe supercomputer system that was mostly ECL logic, required a total of 40 BTU tons of refrigeration capacity for a fully configured system, and cost something like US$15M for a full up system, before maintenance contract. We could sustain a peak of about 266 MFLOPS (133 MFLOPS by each of 2 vector CPU's). In those days, that was about as good as it got.
- merreborn, on 11/19/2008, -0/+4Apparently, the fastest computer in the world, just 8 years ago, was slower than this thing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCI_Red
While ASCI Red clocked in a few terraflops slower than this new NVidia box, it did have 12 TB of storage, and 1.2 TB of RAM. So I guess NVidia's still got a bit of catch up to do to really hold the "supercomputer" title. - steviesteveo, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1The best fact about the PS3 is that if it was around at the turn of the century it would have occupied a place on the Top 10 fastest supercomputers list.
