- Kerath, on 11/21/2008, -36/+7Buried for the one about Spielberg. He's hugely overrated, should've been #1.
- metapop, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6WRONG
- captainserial, on 11/22/2008, -3/+7You didn't read the article. This is an article in-response to the list, not the list itself. You should actually Digg this, as the author of the article doesn't agree with the list either.
- Kerath, on 11/23/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I did. I agree with the original list.
- leonardutah, on 11/22/2008, -1/+9Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, The Color Purple, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, Schindlers List.
Overrated my ass.- DonJuanAussi, on 11/22/2008, -3/+2He is an untalented retard. He deserves No1. In fact he is the most shallow hack in Hollywood by such a large margin, that he is a joke to anyone with an IQ.
How to make money the Spielberg way, take a retarded book with enough action, throw in a kid or two (it is better if the kids make the adults look stupid) and cash in. Of course he did start with comedy... Jaws and the crap he did before Jaws. He also ended with "desperate grasping attempts at an oscar" which succeeded out of sheer pity.
If Spielberg never makes another movie... it will still be too soon. - Scottievm, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Don't forget: Empire of the Sun (my favorite Spielberg film), Munich, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal...all fantastic films.

- CoreyTamas, on 11/21/2008, -15/+37I was open to this and ready to be persuaded, but it didn't happen. Check this it about Kevin Smith for example: "Loving his films makes you geeky, slightly smarter than those around you..."
Give me a small break.- JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -3/+2word.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -5/+13Okay, so one pretentious comment discredits the point of the whole article? Nice try, I think not.
Spike's list sucked.- arobicha, on 11/22/2008, -6/+2Really? I'm of the opinion that anyone who's worshiped for anything other than work which directly bettered society in any magnitude short of tremendously is overrated...
- bobbi21, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3that means put up basically every one in the world as overrated, except like... uh....Gutenberg...and uh.. the guy who discovered agriculture... Well actually if gutenberg didn't invent it someone else would have. technology was all ready for moveable type... so yeah.. go guy who invented agriculture...
and since pretty much no director has ever bettered society tremendously, and since you don't seem to consider varying degrees of overrated-ness, you should be intrinsically against any list of directors since you think all of them are overrated.

- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -2/+6Clerks was a success? It's a cult classic, sure, but my mom isn't going to go see Zach & Mira saying "Wow, it's the guy who made Clerks! I love that!"
Some people like him, some don't, and a lot more have never even heard of him. How can he be over-rated?- billpyle, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4How is Clerks not a success? It cost like $27,000 and made over 3 million theatrically and tons more on video/dvd.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1"How is Clerks not a success?" Because of what I just said? A monetary success? Sure, but it hardly made Kevin Smith a household name (which is essentially what petaganayr was saying)

- almondfilter3, on 11/22/2008, -7/+6Pretty poor list indeed until number 1. Seriously has he done anything relevant the past 2 decades? 6 Star Wars films, he directed 4. The easiest to claim as the best one (Empire), he didn't direct. Pretty overrated indeed.
The FSR really nails the M Night one though, he's pretty much the most criticized director the past couple years.- JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2If you look closely, you'll see his fingerprints on alot of things people hold dear and yet have no idea of his involvement. Like Pixar...
I for one think the man is a national treasure.- tattertech, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Doesn't matter. The man should direct but never write movies in my opinion. He's a brilliant director I think, but a terrible writer.
- familynight, on 11/22/2008, -3/+1Are you being serious? If that was sarcastic, I apologize for the following diatribe and declare myself "the goose." Back to the subject, did you see Signs? Swing away? And one of the ***** payoffs ever in an overblown "suspense" "thriller." Yes, both words needed their own quotation marks to indicate the depth of my disdain. I gave up after Signs but I hear things got even worse with the following films. Don't get me wrong. I liked Unbreakable. Signs was just unforgivable, like having your car keyed. It was a lesson in how to make the worst alien movie ever, one part Field of Dreams, one part Touched by an Angel, one part Mel Gibson and one hundred parts empty suspense. Sorry. I just cannot abide that goddamn film. I realize that wasn't exactly your point, but you called Shyamalan national treasure.
- carpeclunes, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3@familynight
He was talking about George Lucas, not M. Night Shyamalan. I'm going to give it to you straight: you just made yourself look really stupid. Also, Signs is a good movie. - familynight, on 11/22/2008, -2/+2oh, *****. i apologize from the depth of my heart. i was reading quickly through the thread and conflated two comments that had nothing to do with each other. i'm a little drunk and a moron because there was no way that i should have confused this comment. i even looked back at it for a second clearly without a cogent thought in my head. i just clicked reply and forgot to think if i was typing in the right spot or even on the right subject. big sorry. digg me down. signs still sucked.
- carpeclunes, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Take it back!
- familynight, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2C'mon, man. Signs sucked hard. What the hell was going on with that quasi-religious message? God, swing away? Are you telling me that was a good scene? I know it's not a universally reviled film, but what the *****? That ***** with the water was stupid. I'm clearly the biggest idiot in this thread, but I refuse to change my attitude toward Signs.
- TheNik, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2@familynight: No, dude, you're right. Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense (for the most part) are his only good movies. Mostly because Unbreakable doesn't really have the same structure as ALL OF HIS OTHER MOVIES and The Sixth Sense was his first use of what a twist...
- rblancarte, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1It doesn't mater if Lucas has his finger prints on things that A LOT of people hold dear. ILM, Pixar, etc.
The fact is, we are talking directors here. Lucas is a TERRIBLE director. He should never direct. The 4 SW Movies he directed were among the bottom 4 of the whole series (ANH bumping up to #2 because it was such a visionary movie). If you look at his directing list though, almost all the movies TERRIBLE:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000184/#director (I can only give nod to 2, ANH and American Graffiti)
Writer - not too fond of. Where he does his best work is producer, and as a person who helps others ideas grow. If he played to his strengths, Ep1-3 could have been great: ie, make the framework, hand off writing to some solid writers (you know that dialog was terrible), and then go get a few solid directors to make the films. Instead, he does it all, and you can tell, and the product suffered.
- JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2If you look closely, you'll see his fingerprints on alot of things people hold dear and yet have no idea of his involvement. Like Pixar...

2) I await the bury brigade for saying this, but I can't stand Kubrick. He's directed some fantastic movies, but I think that's in spite of him, not due to him. HERESY
Kubrick may be rated high enough to be in the overrated category, but his movies are masterpieces... 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut...- JackSrenton, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7Full Metal Jacket!
Barry Lyndon! - AManWithNoName, on 11/22/2008, -9/+2The only one you listed that I liked was Clockwork Orange to be honest...And that was based off a book, so I don't give him full credit.
- MillionsLivio, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5You're clueless.
- Syric, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3Well think about it this way: Kubrick, Van Sant, etc. are very highly rated, almost universally so. So there's no chance in hell they could be under-rated. Therefore they may be over-rated. Do you follow?

I think you're reaching a bit by calling these great films. The Terminal was downright boring.- TrevorBelmont, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2I went to see The Terminal about a week after it came out. I walked into the theater and I was the only one in the room.

They complain about Spike picking directors that aren't even that highly regarded, then when Spike picks Judd Apatow, they say it's impossible to not like him because "he was a success critically and commercially." You can't have it both ways. Just another condescending film buff. lol he thinks he's the ***** b/c he's familiar with Kurosawa.
In addition, the word "overrated" needs to be outlawed, especially in cases where the issue at hand is 100 per ***** cent subjective.- ZBeeblebrox, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1I can't stand when people say it, drives me nuts, but here I am..
This guy needs to QQ. Seriously.
That whole article was just one big cry.. booo hooo - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9Actually, his point about Judd Apatow was that he's only directed two films, and they were both pretty damn good by most accounts. So either Spike doesn't understand the difference between a director and a producer or... well, I guess that's really just it. He doesn't belong on their crappy list when they're citing movies he didn't even direct.
- ZBeeblebrox, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1I can't stand when people say it, drives me nuts, but here I am..
- rockon4life45, on 11/22/2008, -13/+5No, still agree with Spike, most people are too butthurt to admit what Spike was pointing out.
- teotbote, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4The only thing Spike points out is which of the people among us are neanderthals.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -2/+3I'll admit what Spike was pointing out. That Spike.com is a shallow, unintelligent void of so called journalism that serves to attract only the barely literate who feel sophisticated reading an article lambasting the only directors of whom they've actually heard. Then again, I'm not butthurt about that at all.
- DonJuanAussi, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1You are just a pretentious tryhard.
try thinking for yourself instead of parroting what the flock says the loudest. Spike had it pretty close to perfect. It shows that the people behind Spike have been thinking about this independently in the face of public opinion... while you are just holding onto public opinion with your hairy palms.
Oh, and you are agreeing with the film school retards... oh I mean rejects. They believe that Return of the Jedi is one of the greatest movies... I feel they just nominate the most popular movies of their past, depending on their age at the time... Sad individuals. I would not have any of them working under me. I have rejected people applying to my studio for less. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1"Oh, and you are agreeing with the film school retards... oh I mean rejects."
Haha, oh wow, yeah, way to prove me wrong. There is a pretty clear negative correlation between how much someone likes Spike and their level of intellect. You could be a case study for this theory.

- RussLieber, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2i honestly don't understand the criticism with QT's personality, i understand that he takes film geek to another level but it seems that he's just passionate about what he loves, movies. and i don't think his ego is all that out of control. whenever i see an interview with him he mostly goes on about how awesome scorsese is and rarely talks about himself.
- bigfreakinlion, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I'm with Russ. His interview with Charlie Rose, in particular, comes to mind. He's something of a bombast, but it's clear that his first love is film and that he has a sincere appreciation for the actors/actresses he's worked with.
- AManWithNoName, on 11/22/2008, -6/+13Awesome article. Although, I think it could have been summed up by suggesting that Spike simply rename their list "10 directors who've lost their directing mojo". Virtually every person on the original list are well-known for movies that they did a long time ago, and have recently sucked.
Although, I gotta point out, fighting on the internet IS like winning the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded.- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Well, I guess quoting internet memes is sort of like the special olympics too. Even when you ***** it up people will still encourage you and applaud.
- PatrickFlorida, on 11/22/2008, -9/+4Poorly written. He should have waited a few days to let his editor mess with it. Kevin Smith got him probably the most riled up. Smith's non-talent gets me riled up too.
If he'd agreed with just one choice, it would have carried some weight. But because he made it a point to disagree with EVERY choice, he showed he was just being a reject. - MFoody, on 11/22/2008, -10/+0Making a list of overrated items is stupid. First, there's no standard for how well things are rated. Second, if everyone agrees with your list it is wrong. Say I say 12 monkeys was underrated. And everyone agrees with me that 12 monkeys was awesome, that just means that I was wrong saying that is underrated because it is actually rated very highly.
here are some overrated movies:
The Shawshank Redemption: a Schmaltzy movie that is just good.
The Dark Knight: The best Comic book movie ever. Which is like being the fastest white sprinter.
The Usual Suspects: It is easy to love if you are baffled by obvious plot developments.
North by Northwest: Let's ham it up while running from one arbitrary set piece to another.- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Wait, could you have contradict yourself any harder?
"It's stupid to make a list of overrated things. Here's a list I made of things that are overrated."
Were you going for humor? You might want to seriously work on your delivery. - doublefelix, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Correct me if I am wrong: I think the number of negative ratings for your comment means you're underrated (good!!) but if you had gotten vast approval for your comment you would be overrated and therefore suck. I digg you down even though I totally agree with you and I am sure you would have it no other way.
- MFoody, on 11/22/2008, -0/+0You're wrong: Being overrated doesn't mean something is bad. Taco Bell might be underrated and Fillet Mignon overrated but that does not imply that Fillet Mignon is worse than Taco Bell. My main point was that being underrated is overrated.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Wait, could you have contradict yourself any harder?
- chrismgtis, on 11/22/2008, -9/+11What an idiot this "writer" is. I'm burying this. Some writer got upset that someone else had different opinions and claimed his were the best. 'Whaddaya' know? That's unique.
- swik, on 11/22/2008, -8/+1The Spike article was pretty crap, sure Spielberg and Lucas are gimmes, but Smith, Wes, and a few others have no place on such a list.
- acex23, on 11/22/2008, -5/+5Oh look, a film critic flexing his internet muscles. Wow.
- mcwattersm, on 11/22/2008, -8/+4Synopsis: Spike's list is wrong because someone doesn't agree with the authors opinion.
- xsquirrel378x, on 11/22/2008, -13/+110. Kevin Smith - sucks. made 2 ok films at the start of his career
9. M. Night Shyamalan - a gimmicky pathetic excuse of a filmmaker not even worth mentioning
8. Quentin Tarantino - rips off 300 movies at the same time so you think they're cool. entertaining maybe. overrated yes.
7. Wes Anderson - again two decent movies (bottle rocket, rushmore) the rest *****
6. Judd Apatow - too new to say. not horrible though
5. Bryan Singer - kind of a joke. nothing good, nothing really bad. thriving mediocrity
4. The Coppolas - Francis - no, hes proved himself enough. Sofia - yea she sucks
3. Steven Spielberg - 2 good movies (Duel and A.I.).
2. Tim Burton - I disagree with this one, Tim Burton's good enough. He fits a niche in American film
1. George Lucas - meh. just kind of expired.- derbestemann, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1A.I. was good? (...and schindler's list not?)
the rest is equally riduculous, mate- xsquirrel378x, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1Schindlers List - sappy sap sap sappy sap. I'll take Paul Verhoeven's Black Book any day over that for a good holocaust movie.
- DonJuanAussi, on 11/22/2008, -1/+0They were both complete crap.
- xsquirrel378x, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1Schindlers List - sappy sap sap sappy sap. I'll take Paul Verhoeven's Black Book any day over that for a good holocaust movie.
- familynight, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Wait, wait, wait. You think Spielberg has only done two good movies, and of his movies, the two you are referring to are AI and Duel. I just want to be clear. So, AI is good, while Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T., Close Encounters, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich and Jaws are bad. My opinions differ from yours.
- xsquirrel378x, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1>My opinions differ from yours
exactly. opinions ftw ^_^
- xsquirrel378x, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1>My opinions differ from yours
- leonardutah, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I always hear that ***** argument about Tarantino ripping off earlier films. Yes, he does borrow heavily. But if it's that easy to just pull pieces from other movies, than why isn't every single studio film a huge success? Why not just use his formula and then bam, never have another flop?
Say what you will about the man, but he has talent, and you know what you're going to get when you go to watch one of his movies.
- derbestemann, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1A.I. was good? (...and schindler's list not?)
- spookyttws, on 11/22/2008, -2/+4After reading Spikes list I thought to myself, "I enjoy everyone one of those directors, I don't think they are Gods or can do no wrong, but they've given me a large sampling of good to average movies." So I'm glad others feel similar. If they've amassed a large and relatively positive body of work, how is that overrated? And several of the movies listed as horrible on the Spike list made me think less of them: Catch Me if You Can, The Royal Tenenbaums (several others, but the Spike seems to have pissed themselves and taken the list down) I quite enjoyed those films.
- brusty, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1Agreed. Spike's list was no account.
- hollywoodphony, on 11/22/2008, -3/+5Wow, so the website for a TV network aimed at 20-something fratboys wrote an article about movies that this pretentious movie website didn't think was up to par?!
The reason this FSR article is so bad is that the author has decided he can change the definition of 'overrated' as it suits his purpose.
If his purpose is to say that a director is not overrated in terms of his cult audience, then that's one definition. But if he wants to say that the director is not overrated in terms of critical acclaim, then he can switch those around, as he sees fit.
Kevin Smith isn't overrated because he's not critically acclaimed, because in this case, you somehow can't be overrated by your own cult fans. Unless you're George Lucas, in which case, it's only your fans who think you're overrated, which they are, of course, able to do.
In case you haven't heard of George Lucas, he did 'Star Wars.' Yeah, he's that guy! Apparently, millions of people have never heard of him. I mean, obviously this author doesn't mean in America, right? Oh, he does? Ooh...
Coppola is not overrated because he made some great movies and even if he made stinkers, that doesn't matter. Of course, you can't say that about Hitchcock, because even though he made some of the best movies ever, he's also made some stinkers.
Maybe the Spike article didn't make it clear what they meant by overrated. I think by broadening the scope of what that means, they actually made it a more interesting read, but then again, it's Spike. What do you want from them? Look at their audience.
And while we're doing that, let's look at the audience of Film School Rejects... and more importantly the people they'd like to get in their favor so that they could interview them and then get more hits by that same audience... Oh right, now it makes sense.
And seriously, who hasn't heard of George Lucas? - MrSparkle666, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3My thoughts exactly. The original list was laughably stupid and uninspired.
- Neiby, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Other than Singer, The Coppolas Burton and Spielberg, I agree with the original list.
- theokandroid, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3Dugg for this line,
" I bet you thought you were being really ballsy with this choice, especially considering that your core audience is men who still relive throwing that game-winning touchdown pass twenty years ago and frat boys who think Kurosawa is the sauce they put on their moo shoo." - kb1304, on 11/22/2008, -3/+2This guy's an idiot/elitist..."although I have to assume you’re the type of people that think Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas because you don’t know any better".... ***** you, you smug *****.
- deadbaby, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1I pretty much agree with the original list. These guys aren't bad directors but they are basically rehashing the same formula over and over again. There's nothing wrong with that at all (especially if they still make good films) but if you're actually going to sit down and rate directors for some reason the guys doing really innovative and fresh stuff deserve a lot more credit than the ones who are repeating their past successes.
- mnmleon, on 11/22/2008, -2/+1I find it funny that fsr are mocking another top10 list. their own are just as *****.
- h0mi, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5Attempting to defend Lucas in an "overrated directors" article is an automatic fail.
- Xondar, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4Film School Rejects is the worst film blog I've ever read. I'd go through this article and pick it apart, but I don't feel like writing paragraph after paragraph.
- jeejaso, on 11/22/2008, -0/+0Most of these directors direct the only movies i watch.. how can they be over rate..
- dezweber, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2Might have been a credible list had David Lynch been on it.
- scabbers, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1I agree with Spike's list.
- doctorgrim, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Thank you for destroying this lame ass list.
- brainboy77, on 11/22/2008, -1/+2this wasn't persuasive in any way. filmschoolrejects usually have better written articles, but this is embarassing. francis ford coppola, the director of my favorite movies ever the godfather 1 and 2, is overrated. all of his movies after those, save apocalypse now, were complete *****. Just look at Godfather Part 3. or The Outsiders. that was based on a ***** bestseller book about gangsters. how the ***** do you ruin that. how? The Godfather franchise as well as apocalypse now are classics, but even these movies cannot make up for the utter ***** this man has directed.
- nastri83, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1"Claiming that Kevin Smith is overrated is like saying that comic books are overrated. In fact, just like most directors on this list, Kevin Smith is completely accurately rated."
ARTICLE FAIL - viacombusta, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I'd be interested in reading Filmschoolrejects' article detailed in the last paragraph.
- quisph, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Summary of the article: MY opinion is DIFFERENT. Therefore, you are WRONG.
buried. - vurdillac, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2This guy should relax a little on the "Tim Burton didn't 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'" thing. If a producer exerts an influence on a work to the extent that it reflects the work of the producer more than the actual director, then why not attribute it to the producer? George Lucas didn't direct "The Empire Strikes Back" or "Return of the Jedi" but people always refer to them as his pictures no one complains. I still think of "Poltergeist" as a Spielberg film, because the pacing, look, suburban themes, music - everything - is indistinguishable from Spielberg's other pictures from this period. It just doesn't look or feel like a Tobe Hooper film at all.
- JaffaC, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1This was spot on! That list pissed me off the other day. I'm glad someone said something.
- Merp08, on 11/22/2008, -1/+1I basically agreed with the Spike article.
