- shadowspawn, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6my first thought was how to hack it with a porn theme. like make the spedo a big breast with a penis that goes around as the needle, and hook it into GPS with the current road's max speed limit and display a ***** at the speed limit on the gauge. When they go over the limit the penis starts spooging.
Or, in a realistic handbook, hook in advertisements to it via a flash card for locations. So when you and the family are traveling as you pass by certain markers different items come up. Like "food in 34 miles, next exit" instead of road signs.
but that's me.
ah, if only we could get the SDK for it...

- RealHyperX, on 10/30/2008, -4/+6Weird choice of manufacturers. VW is at the bottom of quality ratings and Toyota is at the top, with Ford being in the middle. I am pretty sure you are not going for the Toyota for the looks, because they are bland. So what is the reasoning? Just hate for Ford?
- nimadude, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Everyone knows that Japanese/European cars > American Cars...
now you can debate it as you please (I realize I am making a stereotype, digg me down you bastards), but despite these improvements to american cars, the quality of engineering in American cars does not satisfy me. - EngineerDIVO, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah, right now Japanese cars are better in quality than American, although Ford's quality has been getting better. I for one hope they continue the trend, then one day I may want to actually buy an American car.
- RealHyperX, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1According to JD Power, consumer reports and many reports, American cars are better in quality than European counter parts. This is just a fact. No BS. Long term and short term studies. I personally own Japanese as daily drivers and American as a fun car (c6). No problems with either.
- JBHedgehog, on 10/30/2008, -9/+5
- caseypc, on 10/29/2008, -1/+89it's about ***** time! Why do cars not already have kickass LCD displays for the gauges?
- gquaglia, on 10/30/2008, -0/+12The same reason they don't all have LED tail lights, built in NAV and back up cameras. $$$$$.
- RNEMESiS42, on 10/30/2008, -2/+3What, you don't? Weird.
- Ravatar, on 10/30/2008, -0/+19You mean the illusion of $$$$$. These features are dirt cheap when you buy in bulk like the majors. The reason they aren't included is for the illusion of luxury. This is the same reason the low-end cars look boring when they're made from the same material as middle to high-end vehicles.
- MOJIRA, on 10/30/2008, -0/+13LCDs are super cheap and most cars have odometers controlled by a computer anyway so... get on it *****!
I want more screens in my car than Wolf Blitzer has in his bathroom!
- collution, on 10/30/2008, -1/+8Not everyone wants a full-on LCD display. What happens when you're battery is dead and your car is powered down in the middle of the night? There's times when a good ol stick and shirl work best. Although I don't mind an LCD screen and would love it probably, some things need to stay basic and not electric driven.
- Myztry, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6You're not really going to care when you're going 0 mph.
- collution, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2When you're working on it, you will. You obviously don't know much about cars. When you're stranded or your car breaks down you may.
There's plenty of reasons why a basic system has advantages over an electrically dependent system.
- shack95, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Quality control - reducing repair.
Just think if they received a bad batch of dashboard lcd's. The reimbursements they would have to give to the individual dealers to have Tech's rip apart dashboards to replace could be a a pain in the $$.
Chrysler had a nasty batch of heater coils that leaked on the floor a few years ago. Yes - having to take out half the dashboard to get behind and replace the unit -is not as bad as a dashboard display. The site of a few cars in the repair area at One dealership - makes you think about multiplying that by a few hundred over the course of a year.
Cars undergo a lot more shakes and bounces and "industrial" conditions. The new lcd/dvd/gps units they include now can be removed rather easily. I have yet to see a dashboard display pop out in two seconds...- iamgnat, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Ummm, the gauge cluster of a car is usually pretty simply to remove (it's 5 screws and 2 plugs in my car). It has to be simple because you already have lamps and LEDs that fail and need to be replaced not to mention the odd unit failure.
Outside of a really poor design (which I don't put it past car mfgs from time to time), having LCDs instead of a physical gauge cluster shouldn't be anymore difficult to R&R. - TehProphet, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2I swear Chrysler just sucks. My parents bought a plymouth acclaim when I was 10, lasted a couple years and the head gasket blew out and the engine was totaled. Now I'm 17, parents bought yet another plymouth acclaim, that they let me drive. At 72,000 miles(I've only put like 600 miles on it, they got it like 4 months ago) The fuel line is clogged, I spend 2 days trying to figure out what it was, fix it. next day the engine is ticking and running like *****, so I look at the oil and it's the consistency of water, ***** blown head gasket again!
- Myztry, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Hit the Service Mode button, and have the car display diagnostics. Would kick ass over removing the side kick panel to plug into an external unit...
- iamgnat, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Ummm, the gauge cluster of a car is usually pretty simply to remove (it's 5 screws and 2 plugs in my car). It has to be simple because you already have lamps and LEDs that fail and need to be replaced not to mention the odd unit failure.
- krc1, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Night blindness.
- Myztry, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Portable DVD players are only about AU$70 and have the LCD, display driver and processor for such a simple task. Much cheaper than buying a mechanical dash cluster.
- gquaglia, on 10/30/2008, -0/+12The same reason they don't all have LED tail lights, built in NAV and back up cameras. $$$$$.
- Modestexcuse, on 10/29/2008, -2/+36I really like the idea of the customization that this offers. I don't need RPM's, but do want MPG's.
I also like how colors will help represent your good or bad driving habits.- RoboRay, on 10/30/2008, -0/+16Well, I want ALL RPMs, and you can color them all red for my bad driving habits!
- killtrocity, on 10/30/2008, -1/+21Wtf? Maybe if you drive an automatic. There is no way I would go without a tachometer. While I can drive by sound, there is no way I would go without it.
Additionally, there are already quite a few cars that display instantaneous MPG, as well as trip and cumulative MPG. (BMW to name one automaker)- 0x0000ff, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5My 1993 Ford Fairmont has an LCD display for L/KM.. instant, average and trip.
- jlan, on 10/30/2008, -2/+8My 1986 buick did it. pretty much all cars do now. don't need no fancy bmw for that old trick
- dext3r, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5My 1935 Packard had an LCD display also.
- Nitesmoke, on 10/30/2008, -5/+3What's the tach for? Unless you're a woman, you should be able to tell your rpm by the sound of the engine.
- killtrocity, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3First of all, a tachometer is not another word for "dial." It displays the engine's revolutions per minute. Therefore, it could be a digital display, or analog. I don't understand this talk about LCDs because that is not what I was referring to. I will admit that I think LCDs are nice/cool/useful as well. I was simply stating that I like having a tachometer because it gives me information about the car.
I can tell if there is something wrong when it bobs while I'm idling, and it allows me to know if I am close to redlining the car. Without a tach, there would be no "redline."
You could argue that you can do everything by sound, because you can. However, it allows me to drive more efficiently, and accelerate to the limit of the engine without hitting it. - Vaelkar, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5My '06 Cobalt has the fuel economy display.
And yeah, I completely agree with the not being able to drive without a tach. Sure, I can drive based on the engine sound... but then again, I have upgraded to the 21st century and actually enjoy listening to my stereo. - feliks2, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1Hell, I can drive by feel (touch?), and it works perfectly fine while accelerating, but if I do that while I'm cruising at a constant speed and I look at the tacho sometimes the engine will be going at like 3000, so yeah, you definately need a tacho.
- monkzero, on 10/30/2008, -1/+5"I also like how colors will help represent your good or bad driving habits. "
I just use the drivers around me to let me know about my driving habits.
- Bizarrkley, on 10/29/2008, -13/+56Until you get BSOD and run over a little baby girl.
- guyinjapan, on 10/30/2008, -4/+2Heh yeah, I was hoping somebody would mention that. Looks sexy... but that sucker's gotta have some damn perfect bug-proof software running it, cause the last thing you want is your dash locking up while you're flying down the interstate at 80 miles an hour. But, you know, *****, whatever. It's damn sexy. I'd buy it.
- Ravatar, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8Cars have been running software for decades, this is not a new problem.
- guyinjapan, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Yeah I know, but that's mainly simple stuff. While I'm not a professional computer scientist, it seems to me that an animated GUI system on a dash would require significantly more complex software than any other component of a car. I know in-dash GPS systems are quite common these days, but those aren't a vital component of the vehicle, and they have been known to lock up, like any computer system. Not often, but it happens. GPS systems lock up, cellphones lock up, iPods lock up, anything that renders graphics generally has a bug once in a blue moon. But hey, if it's just the GPS, no biggie. On a dashboard, on the other hand, it might be a lot harder to deal with some sort of bug or glitch. Not saying it'll be a common problem, but all it takes is one glitch, and someone dies. I'm just playing devil's advocate though. Logistically, it's not something that should be a problem. But, you know, I also think Ford isn't necessarily the most qualified company to try to pull it off lol. It's a really cool concept and has the potential to work beautifully, but there are always some implementation concerns when you entrust vital instruments to a flashy display system. Just my two cents.
- XtheXlanternX, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1My speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and RPM indicator have not worked in months. Haven't had a problem.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/30/2008, -1/+24Right, just like when my speedometer crapped out and I instantly veered off the road onto the sidewalk and killed half a dozen innocent people. That' s just what happens when your gauges break.
- 223Sniper, on 10/30/2008, -2/+2dugg down for running over baby girl, i just had mine :*(
- Bizarrkley, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Are you saying you just had your baby girl run over or you just had a baby girl. There's a HUGE difference. I'm hoping for the latter.
- tomis, on 10/29/2008, -12/+4Seams to me if they wanted it to be a fuel efficient display they'd be using e-ink instead of an LCD...
- LordStryker, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11Seems to me you fail.
- Murdats, on 10/30/2008, -1/+5eink is only really viable when the display only changes at large intervals, say after you have read an entire page of static text.
unless you only plan on changing speed, rpm or anything else less then every second then eink is not really viable.- tomis, on 10/31/2008, -0/+1Well then they'd better get on about lowering that refresh rate hadn't they!
- subterfuge, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7seriously? an lcd screen is very efficient compared to an engine that's powered by the exploding remains of long-dead organisms.
- RNEMESiS42, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2...and the LCD has to get it's power from somewhere...the exploding remains of long-dead organisms?
- DeFex, on 10/30/2008, -9/+3looks like some stupid abit overclocking program.
- Ender0910, on 10/30/2008, -2/+17Hell yeah! Efficiency leaves!
- Atmandk, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I thought that was kinda dumb. Seems like the gimmick would wear off pretty quickly. I'd just want to see a number, not a relative amount of leaves and vines. Marketing *****.
- enevitable, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11From the looks of it ford has turned economic driving into a game with the leaves & vines system illustrated.
If so it looks like it provides a simple and entertaining way for the average consumer to save money and be greener. - dylio, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9Makes driving more like a video game.
- Lewie, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5This can't be good.
- dvsbastard, on 10/30/2008, -8/+9Increased cost (production, maintenance and repair), with very little benefit?!
I think mechanical gauges are still the better option...- razrielle, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1 Over time the cost will decrease, less moving parts if you change to an electrical system rather then a mechanical
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Your gauges in your car aren't even "mechanical" anymore. Everything runs through the computer, which manipulates the gauges. What difference does it make on how it is displayed if you're getting the same information?
- waddling, on 10/30/2008, -10/+1Hahaha it is still metrically challenged. Until the US decides to enter the 20th century, the dash is as "futuristic" as Robby the robot.
- aoou4444, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9Right, because it couldn't possibly be changed to display metric units.
- RizzoFrank, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Pretty sure the digital dash on every Ford and GM I have owned has a button to switch from English to metric units. nubsauce.
- a117, on 10/30/2008, -4/+7That's pretty cool... but I'm still not going to buy a hybrid.
- gquaglia, on 10/30/2008, -2/+11Pretty cool but I'm still not going to buy a Ford.
- TheHayze, on 10/30/2008, -5/+10No tach? I like knowing how fast my engine is running. And those leaves are odd, why not just do real-time mpg numbers?
- aoou4444, on 10/30/2008, -0/+11Did you miss the part about it being customizable?
- mrmacky, on 10/30/2008, -0/+9The sad thing is - this brings back /memories/ for me.
My grandparents used to have a Pontiac with a digital speedometer. It was the coolest thing ever, yet I haven't seen it in a car since. Cars get more and more futuristic but I can't seem to find one with a decent digital readout.
If you didn't have to fix or repair that screen daily, I'd get one in a heart beat.- ThatGeek, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2minis have the giant central speedometer but they also have a digital one behind the steering wheel
- videographer, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Well, the Prius has a digital speedo readout in addition to the central info screen. And right now my screen reads 48.9MPG.
- megadan76, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2My old man's new Civic or whatever Honda (the cheap one) has an all digital speedometer (no meter at all, just a numeric read out). Kinda cool, all though it's not very accurate at low speeds.
- suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -0/+1my dads old Buick '96 skylark used to have a lcd dash. It was green and i remember thinking it was the coolest ***** ever. But then it would die randomly during the winter, and eventually it (the dash) died altogether, so he got rid of the car.
- BossKey, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1One reason the digital speedometers faded out for a while is because they were *too* digital.
Analog dial speedometers are easier to read against a target speed because like an analog clock, your eye can instantly see the angle of the hand.
With digital speedometers, you mentally have to parse the numbers and calculate them against the desired speed, because the general shape of the numbers is always the same...a loose variation on two rectangles (or three if you're lucky). With a dial speedometer, your mind gets used to which needle angles are your typical speeds for certain roads (35mph, 65mph...). A glance tells you how close you are to that speed, with no intervening head math involved. The less time your brain needs to stare at and process the dashboard, the safer the driving.
The whole digital watch/digital speedometer thing turned out to be a case study about when technology is not necessarily an improvement over analog unless its UI is done right. And so they backed off for a few years. Properly implemented "digital" gauges would present this information graphically, with a secondary display for the actual number. And that's what this Ford Fusion dashboard looks like: Lessons learned, digital information is presented graphically for fast, safe readability as it is in digital airliner cockpits, though I think the colors are a bit much here.
- ThatGeek, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2minis have the giant central speedometer but they also have a digital one behind the steering wheel
- revvolution, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1More Leaves the more efficiently you're driving?
honestly they could put one of those in all their cars to make you feel you're not raping the earth as much. Next it'll be leave-meters in the next generation expedition. - Mohdoo, on 10/30/2008, -2/+5It looked a little laggy/choppy to me. That would annoy the hell out of me.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4You should try to keep your eyes on the road more.
- jhails, on 10/30/2008, -4/+8Very cool, but what happens when you get a blue screen of death? Also... I know from experience that old style appliances (pre digital washers, dryers, toasters, furnaces, dish washers etc lasted a lot longer than the cool new appliances. How enviromental is it if you have to toss your five year old car in the recycling bin because its too expensive to repair the fancy electronics when they fail? Thats what has happened to the cool enviromentally friendly high end washer and dryer we bought 5 years ago.
My parents used the same toaster for twenty three years and they finally gave it away because they wanted something more modern. Its replacement lasted two years.
Its is cool eye candy though. - Brian48216, on 10/30/2008, -4/+8god ford...you have an LCD screen where you could make ANY design and you choose the speedometer to look like a '92 Ford escort's....
LCD screens for speedometers aren't exactly new....Mercedes had them in their S class a few years back. - PhillyMJS, on 10/30/2008, -7/+24A Ford with cool gauges is still a Ford.

- RizzoFrank, on 10/30/2008, -9/+4Your right, It's a car that will be reliable for a life time.
- Nickolassc, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6 That dash display is uglier than crap to me and would drive me nuts. I guess I just like the classic look of minimalist gauges. Plus I don't need a display to tell me how to save gasoline, common sense is all it takes.
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3If only common sense were common, the problems of this world would disappear in an instant.
- DJBONEZ, on 10/30/2008, -3/+5It will be nice when someone starts to skin 'em. The only thing is you don't want to find a BSOD when you are in a Work Zone on the highway or in some other critical times.

- trolleyfan, on 10/30/2008, -3/+4Wow! That's an accident waiting to happen...or several hundred...
I mean, if talking on a cell phone can distract you from looking at the road, how much more can actually *not* looking at the road because you're watching all the pretty colors distract you? - mentor972, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3This would be sweet if you could customize it in Photoshop.
- gquaglia, on 10/30/2008, -2/+3I like the idea of LED displays, but this one looks like someone threw up on it. Who the ***** designed that ugly thing.
- Jektal, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1LCD, not LED
- gquaglia, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1Thats what I meant.
- Jektal, on 10/30/2008, -1/+1LCD, not LED
- chuckstab, on 10/30/2008, -1/+7I have an old BMW with a gauge below my speedo that tells me my current MPG. I don't see a need for anything beyond that. What a waste of money, Ford. Stop building ***** cars so Americans can be proud to own American cars. That's what consumers need! Not douchey abstract gauges formed by ***** vines.
- dmadip, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5Except that gauge is totally unreliable. The only correct setting is 0 MPG when you are stopped.
- chuckstab, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I've found mine to be correct while driving at constant speed, but most of the time when you're accelerating, the needle is buried, which is probably still accurate. It's not perfect, but I can't really complain. I have a 1991 525i with 260k and runs like a champ so my current gas mileage is the least of my worries.
- shauncullen, on 10/30/2008, -1/+14I'm soooo happy I'm saving the environment by driving my hybrid. I'm just great. Oooooh, look at the leaves growing in unison with my smugness. It's makes me so self-satisfied I can't help but look at the leaves... *CRASH INTO TELEPHONE POLE*
*DEAD*
Fin- MOJIRA, on 10/30/2008, -0/+8Would have been funnier if you crashed into a tree and were impaled by a branch or something.
- Wrangler76, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4What a waste of money for both Ford and the consumer. They outfit more expensive LCD gauges into their hybrids, but they somehow manage to make it still look like some graphic that came from a 1998 PC racing game.
- jonnyboy1544, on 10/30/2008, -0/+7Just another thing that will ultimately break.
- mindsnare1, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Fail - Speedometer only goes to 120
- mmittimm, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3It's a hybrid. It probably can't even get to 120.
- m00dy, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3I like the lambos reventons gauges http://www.electrobeans.de/bilder/archiv/20071129_ ...
- Baskins, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3I've actually been arguing this for a couple of years now that a simple instantaneous MPG gauge in every car would drastically improve everyone's mileage. I quickly came to this conclusion after I bought my Civic hybrid. It comes with such a gauge, and it becomes a game (almost an obsession) to keep the number as high as possible while driving. About a year later my brother bought a regular Civic and the dash is laid out *identically*, minus the battery pack indicator....and the MPG gauge (but it still has the temp gauge which overlays exactly where the MPG gauge would sit).
I can't believe it would cost that much to include such a feature, but that's likely their argument for not making it a regular feature.
For those interested, there's the ScanGauge ( http://www.scangauge.com/ ), which actually provides a lot more information beyond just MPG. A tad pricey but it's suppose to be pretty good.- MilesyMiles, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3*****, could that be any uglier?
If I wanted my car to look like an off-duty taxi, I'd go buy one.
- MilesyMiles, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3*****, could that be any uglier?
- meeko81, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Looks nice. I want to buy an American car, but listen Ford, we want cars that are fuel efficient and reliable. If you can perfect that formula like Honda has, then you will have my vote. Until then I will be purchasing Hondas.
- RizzoFrank, on 10/30/2008, -1/+2Stop crying. It looks better than green numbers with an orange needle.
- anyone4apint, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Leaves.... tree leaves now feature on the dash board of a Ford car. That is it people, the battle is over and sadly the tree hugging hippies have won. Such a shame.
- copypastry, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5Ten bucks says you get interstitial ads.
- junglist1319, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Excellent. I'm glad that the possible 10 billion in government bailouts (to be funded by the taxpayers) will make for some pretty dashboard lights.
- Rothbardosaurus, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Part car, part video game. I APPROVE!
- dmadip, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4this is awesome.Throw in GPS/audio/etc and you have a deal. Too bad its on a Ford
- FortyCaliber, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Now if they can figure out a way to bring American jobs back to America...
- av4rice, on 10/30/2008, -0/+12I realize it's just a direct screencap of the video player, but having a 'Play' arrow on that first image is pretty misleading. I keep wanting to click it but it doesn't do anything.
